The collection consists of letters Camden Evans wrote to his wife and her father in Columbus (Ga.) from 1862-1864. He wrote
from numerous camps in towns including Tupelo (Miss.), Murfreesboro (Tenn.), and Ringgold and Dalton (Ga.). In his letters
he complained about how badly privates were treated and the lack of food and clothing. He asked Mr. Laney to bring him a boy
to wash his clothes and forage for food, and he constantly tried to arrange for a furlough or a substitute. He gave his opinions
of Generals Grant, Johnson, Bragg and Hardee. By May 22, 1864 he was near Atlanta and described having no clean clothes for
three weeks, and being on picket duty for 24 hours without relief. By July 12, 1864 he had learned of his son Bobbie's death.
His last letter is dated July 17, 1864. There is one letter from Emma to her husband and several letters from her after the
war to her mother. In these she mentioned her second husband Steve Smith, her daughter Daisy, and a move to Birmingham (Ala.)

Most of the 44 photographs in this collection were taken by the White Studio of New York in the early 1920's. Some appeared
in the 1925 Pandora. Most are views of the campus and its buildings, but one individual and several group portraits are included.
Among noteworthy shots are a view of the arboretum that was replaced by Sanford Stadium, Herty Field being used for student
calisthenics, the Strahan House that was replaced by the Law Library, the loggia atop Memorial Hall, Soule Hall with the amphitheater
in front and the Sanford athletic field near the site of today's Miller Learning Center. This collection was originally in
one folder marked "Photographs, Undated" in box 3 of collection UGA 92-140, General Extension Papers. Three photographs of
class reunions in the 1950's seem out of place in the collection, but may explain how these photographs came to be included
in the General Extension files. They are stamped on the back with "Reprint may be ordered from Univ. of Ga. Photo Dept. Division
of Gen. Ext."

Captain Thomas Mickleberry Merritt swords
|

|
Creator: |

|
|
Dates: |
1812-1865 |
|
|
Contents: |
The collection consists of three swords owned by Captain Thomas Mickleberry Merritt. His unit in the Civil War was Company
G, 2nd Georgia Regiment (Marion County) in Army of Tennessee.
1. The Officer's Heavy Straight Saber has a 37.5 inch steel blade and a right-handed swept brass hilt. This weapon, with accompanying
iron scabbard, was apparently manufactured in the late 18th or early 19th century. The blade is high quality steel, possibly
of German manufacture. It is centrally ridged along the length of the blade, creating the effect of a double-fuller along
both sides. In addition, there is a dorsal spine flattened some 30" from the hilt pointward. Along this spine, at the hilt,
is an engraved inscription. "M" is monogrammed in a circle. This is followed by "S[?]ture Imple du Klingenthal Juin 1812".
The swept hilts are made of brass, and bear a small stamped fleur-de-lis and the word "Versailles" along the rear sweep. The
grip, originally leather over corded wood, is largely devoid of leather. This is a weapon of exceptional quality.
2. Cavalry Officer's Heavy Saber has a 35 inch steel blade and a right-handed swept brass hilt. This weapon was manufactured
in New Orleans, Louisiana, in August of 1861 by Thomas, Griswold, & Co. The blade is characterized by hevay pitting and corrosion,
though the brass hilt seems relatively undamaged, save a bar break along the lead sweep.
3. Cavalry/Infantry Officer's Saber (Light) has a 35 inch steel blade and a right-handed swept brass hilt. This saber was
the personal property of Captain Thomas Mickleberry Merritt, and was given to the University of Georgia with a steel scabbard.
It is of a fairly common pattern, most closely representing the "Palmetto" type sabers of 1852, which were produced in Columbia,
South Carolina, by William Glaze & Company.

|
Contents: |
The collection consists of a volume of Catholic canon law. Bound in heavy wooden boards covered with goatskin with traces
of bosses, this Italian 14th century Canon Law of the Catholic Church is in Latin manuscript on paper, a 41 x 31 cm. folio.
The watermark of the paper used in Part I is a standing dove with an olive branch of five twigs. The watermark of Part II
seems to be an interwoven S. The volume consists of the following three parts: Part I. 228 leaves, a dictionary of Canon Law
terms with their definitions and descriptions; Part 2. 44 leaves, clarifications and distinctions of concepts pertaining to
Canon Law; Part 3. 3 leaves, table of contents for Part II. Written in at least two different hands in two columns, with many
floriated red initials and capital strokes, the text is full of abbreviations and contractions. A Latin manuscript note inside
the front cover reads "The name of the author is given nowhere in this book. It contains questions and resolutions of the
Canon Law in alphabetic order. The writing, or lettering, I would say, is from the middle of the 14th century." Another manuscript
note describes the title of the two parts thus: Summula Juris Canonici et Johannis Andrea Distinctiones Decretalium.

April 14), and "Nashville" explosion (1863 March 1). Letters after the war are from parents and siblings and mention a desire
to move from Georgia in hopes of improving their life. Writings include commencement sermons given by Charles at Methodist
College of Georgia and later at other schools and churches between 1881 and 1893. Two oaths of amnesty are included with printed
material.

Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. family papers
|

Creator: |
Jones family |

|
Dates: |
circa 1749-1930 |
|
|
Contents: |
The collection consists of papers of the Rev. Charles Colcock Jones family of Liberty County, Georgia from ca. 1749-1909.
The early letters (1850-1861) are between Charles Colcock Jones and Mary Jones in Liberty County, Georgia and their son, Charles
Jr., while at school in Princeton and Harvard and later in Savannah (Ga.) where he set up his law practice. The letters discuss
social and family life, plantation life, politics and government, religious philosophies, and events leading up to the Civil
War. From 1861-1865, Charles Jr.'s letters chronicle his involvement as an officer in the Chatham Artillery stationed along
the Georgia coast near Savannah, then Charleston and James Island (S.C.), and Jacksonville (Fla.). After the war, the personal
correspondence is mainly between Charles Jr., his mother Mary Jones, his wife Eva Eve Jones, and his brother Joseph Jones.
There is also a smattering of correspondence regarding his law practice.
The collection also contains two volumes of letters Eva Eve Jones wrote to family describing her travels through Europe in
1879, manuscripts of Charles Jr.'s writings on Georgia history, Charles Jr.'s speeches including an 1861 speech to the Chatham
Artillery, and addresses (1886-1892) he gave before the Confederate Survivors Association. Also included is a copy of the
original manuscript for William Bartram's book Observations on the Creek and Cherokee Indians attributed to Ephraim G. Sqier
(1821-1888). The manuscript contains tracings of Bartram's drawing of prehistoric mounds, Creek towns, and Cherokee and Creek
structures not found in the published work.

The collection consists of one bound manuscript compiled by Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. entitled "Letter of General Robert
E. Lee tendering to the President of the Confederate States his resignation of the command of the Army of Northern Virginia:
with explanatory remarks by Charles C. Jones, Jr." Thus, the main body of the manuscript is Jones' transcription of Lee's
famous letter. More importantly, however, the volume has tipped in six prints of Lee, six of Jefferson Davis, two of General
George Meade, and one each of Generals P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, A.P. Hill, T.J. Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston, John
H. Morgan, and J.E.B. Stuart. Views included are two of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Capitol at Richmond, and two unusual
views of Richmond, as well as a folding map. In addition three letters are tipped in: 1. opposite page 4. This letter from
General G. E. Pickett to General Braxton Bragg, dated 26 April 1864, one page, discusses military matters preparatory to the
Battle of the Crater and as such is historically important. 2. opposite page 6. Note signed by Robert E. Lee and addressed
to President Davis informing him the the "Florida Brigade cannot be spared from the army." 3. opposite page 11. Note signed
by Davis and dated 25 August 1863 referring to the above. Apparently both 2 and 3 are endorsements from the same original
piece and separated by Jones for inclusion in this volume. The volume also has clippings of Jones' "A Piece of Secret History"
(Scribner's Magazine, February 1876) and a review of this article (The Cycle, 29 January 1876).
