The collection consists of correspondence and receipts. The correspondence begins in 1895 when Annie Coombs is fourteen years
old and writing to her friend Oscar Maxwell. She goes away to school at Georgia Normal and Industrial College in Milledgeville
and writes him about her studies, activities and friends. Apparently they used the nicknames Sun Flower (Oscar) and Hyacinth
(Annie) in their early letters to conceal the identity of the writers, since their parents did not approve of the letter writing.
They planned to marry in December 1897, even though her parents objected. But Oscar's December 17 letter states that Annie
has backed out. By 1900 Oscar and Annie are married with a son Newton. Letters in 1918 tell of the sickness and death of Newton,
probably of influenza. There are a few letters from other family members. Transcripts of the letters are included.

William Gibbs McAdoo letter

Creator: |
McAdoo, W. G. (William Gibbs), 1820-1894 |
|
|
Dates: |
1866 April 23 |
|
|
Contents: |
A love letter, faintly veiled, to an unmarried young woman, written at the time McAdoo was married to the daughter of General
John Floyd, a prominent Tennessee Indian fighter. His wife was a published author, and he and she apparently enjoyed together
cultural pursuits (see biography at Georgia Historical Society), pursuits which his letter indicates would have found acceptance
with Miss Prudden. The Prudden liason never broke the marriage, as he spent the remainder of his life with his then wife.
Written from the coast of Georgia, the letter is framed against a background of local history and scenery, but it is constructed
in a literary fashion. McAdoo reveals himself to be eloquent of word, not unphilosophical, and well read. On page 2, there
appears an original poem by McAdoo, a point of significance. The National Union Catalog shows all McAdoo's published writings
to have been non-literary. The manuscript sections of the American Book Prices Current for the period 1945-1977 show no appearance
of McAdoo manuscript material. The tone of the letter and his comprehension of poetry (e.g. quote from Campbell on page 1
of the typescript) create the impression that McAdoo was inclined to verbal eloquence and resorted to paper for its recording.
His literary output, however, has not come to light. This may be the sole surviving example of his poetry. Most of the local
historical and natural scenery comment reveals what is already known, some of it, however, nicely presented within the literary
framework already noted, is of interest from that perspectives and hence transcends being purely a rehash of already available
local historical information. There are several descriptions of War damage which may not be available elsewhere (e.g., comment
of Dungeness on page 3 of the typescript). On one occasion, the letter displays a boyish humor. Noting the passivity of basking
alligators to the approach of his steamer, he finds them "as languid and motionless as if they were, also, under the protection
of the Freedman's Bureau." On another occasion, it is clear that his sentiment for the Confederacy had not died in April of
1865; passing Fort Jackson, he notes: "As we came down the Savannah River, we passed the dismantled old Fort Jackson. A piece
of artillery lying here and there tumbled out of its embrasure, covered with rust, and the general neglect and decay, seemed
sadly typical of the fortunes of that power which had it manned and bristling with guns when I last visited the spot two and
a half years ago." Should there ever be a full fledged biographical treatment of McAdoo, this letter presents some evidence
of the romantic side of the man's make-up together with a lead for the biographer to develop. There is no question that McAdoo
hoped to build upon whatever the extent of his relationship with Miss Prudden had been. Additionally and specifically, this
letter gives his thought on war. Additionally and generally, the letter displays evidence of a man quite at home in worlds
less structured than that of the jurist. The typescript of the original accompanies it.

Contents: |
Consists of one letter written by R.W. McCormick at Oglethorpe University and sent to his friend "Rachel." McCormick writes
about the inauguration of Governor Herschel V. Johnson on November 7, 1855 in Milledgeville, Georgia. He writes that many
in attendance represented the "beauty and chivalry of the Empire State of the South." The letter also describes that the number
of women in attendance was "so numerous that they occupied most of the seats so that the legislators were obliged to stand."
At the end of the letter, McCormick also gives a detailed and unflattering description of Robert Toombs and Alexander Stephens,
who were both in attendance.
The author of the letter is probably Robert Warnock McCormick, who attended Oglethorpe University at this time according to
Allen P. Tankersley's 1951 book College Life at Old Oglethorpe. McCormick was a pastor, who lived from 1828-1879, according
to the Necrological Reports and Annual Proceedings of the Alumni Association of Princeton Theological Seminary, Volume 1 by
the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1891.

Janet B. Scarborough Merritt was elected to represent the Sumter County (at the time, the 68th district) in the Georgia State
House in 1964. The only woman in the Georgia State House of Representatives when she was elected, and the first to represent
Sumter County, Merritt called herself a "full-time" representative. The topic of the role of women in government is thoroughly
documented throughout Merritt's speeches and writings. She served four terms in that position: she was elected again in 1966,
in 1968 (after reapportionment combined Sumter with Macon and Schley counties into the new 46th district), and in 1970. In
1972, after a second reapportionment, Merritt was defeated for re-election by her former colleague in the House, Oliver Oxford,
in a run-off. Merritt ran against Oxford a second time in the 1974 election, but was again narrowly defeated in a run-off.
The collection documents Merritt's campaigns, her time in the state legislature and her community activities including heavy
involvement in the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) Of particular note are materials documenting Merritt's ongoing
battle to change Georgia's state flag. In 1969, Merritt sponsored a bill to change the Georgia flag adopted in 1955, shortly
after the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling, back to the 1879 version, which did not include the Confederate
battle flag. Included in the collection are speeches, notes, journals, correspondence, clippings, photographs, artifacts,
and audiovisual material.
