Collection Description

Historical Note

"Leslie [Jean Michel] originally hailed from Erie, PA and came South to attend horticulture school at the University of Georgia. She now lives in San Rafael, CA with her husband, Bob.

During her time in Athens, Leslie was a vibrant force in both the art and music scenes. She took over the Koffee Klub from Rick the Printer and developed the Night Gallery, where coffee was served far into the night and art installations and dancing dominated the front room of what is now the Grit restaurant on Prince Avenue. She was also a tireless organizer of events such as the Loud Family Reunion and other gatherings where grain alcohol punch was served from a claw-footed bathtub on the front porch of her Barber Street apartment.

In California, Leslie became a performance artist with several dance/performance/theater collectives, and continued to work for a time as a floral designer. When she had to recuperate from a grave medical condition, Leslie focused her intense energy into learning Apple computers from the inside out, and in becoming fluent in multiple machine languages. Additionally, her artwork may be seen in Mickey Hart's book, Planet Drum, which was released to accompany his Planet Drum album and Global Drum project." --(3/3/16) from http://artrocksathens.com/VIPGallery500web/html_bios/LeslieMichel.html
