Collection Description

Historical Note

James Edward Drake (1902-1969) was a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps (1919-1921), the U.S. Navy (until 1934) as a yeoman 1st class and ship's writer, and in the Naval Reserve. He briefly served as a prison guard in the United States Penitentiary in Atlanta. He served with the U.S. Border Patrol as a patrol inspector in Mobile, Alabama and Sarasota, Florida. He was married to Gladys Hogg from 1928-1941, and Ethel Lee Smith in 1957.

Scope and Content

This collection contains correspondence and paperwork ragarding his time serving in the U.S. Navy, and his work with the U.S. Border Patrol. Also included is correspondence from his first wife Gladys and friends. Items include documents related to Border Patrol investigations, and immigration policies and procedures printed during the 1930s when the Border Patrol was undegoing s significant expansion.
