Contents: |
The collection consists of a letter from A. A. Echols, dated November 12, 1860 from Savannah, Georgia, to Emory Washburn,
former governor of Massachusetts. This lengthy letter, prompted by Lincoln's election six days earlier, expresses early Southern
reaction to that election, Civil War causes, and the Southern course of action. Echols, apparently a long-time friend of Washburn,
mildly criticizes him for joining the Republican Party, predicts that the effect of Lincoln's election will be peaceful secession,
and proposes some commercial realignments between the North and South.

Dates: |
1801 July 3, August 26 |
|
|
Contents: |
The collection consists of two affidavits regarding the importation and sales of enslaved people. Sworn and sealed July 3,
1801, Camden County, Georgia, signed "David Garvin", the first affidavit respects the sale of six enslaved people (delivered
in the year 1799) to John Kinnard [sic]. The second affidavit (3 pages in length) dated August 26, 1801, Savannah, consists
of testimony of Savannah slave traders Hector Mitchell and Mr. Gairdner, who swore that "sometime in the year [1797] a parcel
of [thirty-six enslaved people] was picked up at sea." Mitchell and Gairdner, agents for John and James McBurney, the fugitives'
owners, had the runaways put in jail; an ordinance of the Savannah city council arranged their sale to David Garvin. This
statement goes on to mention that John Kinnard is now the legal owner of six of the [thirty-six enslaved people] named in
the earlier affidavit of July 3.

The collection consists of a bill of sale from Savannah, Georgia for the purchase of an enslaved woman, Ellen, and her child,
Caroline, and an agreement made between Ellen and Angus McQueen. The bill of sale shows that Jackson Hodges paid $3,700 dollars

A year later after the end of the Civil War, an indenture agreement was made between Angus McQueen of Montgomery County, Georgia
and the "now freed woman," Ellen. In the agreement, Ellen agrees to continue working on McQueen's plantation. McQueen "promises
and agrees to feed, clothe, and give medical attention to" Ellen and her child. These terms are considered to be Ellen's "just
compensation for the labor performed." McQueen agrees to these terms as long as Ellen "will obey all orders" and "will be
respectful, submissive, and obedient."

Akehurst - Lines family papers

Lines family |
|
|
Dates: |
1850-1914 |
|
|
Contents: |
The collection consists of correspondence and diaries of the Akehurst and Lines families from 1850-1914. The bulk of the
correspondence contains letters between Jennie Akehurst, a teacher at Covington, Georgia and Sylvanus Lines of Fayetteville
Georgia during their courtship (1857-1860) and married life (1861-1874). Topics discussed include family matters, life in
Georgia, and news of relatives. Another portion of the correspondence consists of letters to and from Daisy Lines while teaching
in Irvington, Georgia (1882-1898). Includes drafts of letters to and letters from Jerome Reneau, writing from Greene County,
Alabama and Texas; correspondence to Jennie Lines; and correspondence from Daisy's aunt Anna Marie Akehurst Barham. Topics
discussed include Reneau and Daisy's friendship, Reneau's farming in Alabama, social events, Daisy's teaching, and family
news.
The diaries were written by Jennie Akehurst Lines (1859-1861 and 1861-1871) and Anna Maria Akehurst Barham (1861-1871). Jennie's
diary entries prior to 1861 mainly concern financial hardships and personal matters. Beginning in 1860, entries discuss the
political climate, the 1860 election, abolitionists, and slavery. For 1861-1866, the diary contains information on Georgia's
succession from the union, social life and living conditions during the Civil War, problems with slaves, and freedmen. Entries
for 1866-1871 again mainly focus on personal matters. The Barham diary contains entries pertaining to the Female Orphans'
Asylum (Macon, Ga.), where she was matron, the South's reaction to the Battle of Bull Run, economic and living conditions
in Georgia during the Civil War, problems with Confederate currency, cotton planting both during and after the war, and problems
hiring and supervising freedmen.

and its usefulness. It is primarily in familiar cursive. The remainder of the letters, though, are in shorthand. All are to

factors, producers, and dealers in the United States "turpentine belt" (Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina,

Armenian Bible Leaf

|
Contents: |
This collection is comprised of one leaf of an Armenian Bible, stated to be from the early 12th Century.
Dealer's note: The text of this leaf is from a 5th century translation of the Bible by the Armenian prelate Maschdots Mesrob
(circa 354-441) and is in the Haikian alphabet of 38 characters. Of special interest here is the paper, claimed (in an accompanying
note) to have been manufactured in the Near East early in the 12th century, more than 150 years before Fabriano began making
paper in Italy. While it is conceivable that the dating here is correct, the presence of a watermark (a feature not in common
use at that time) suggests that the paper might have ben made later. The watermark, however, is not in Briquet.
