Historical Note

Donald G. Mitchell Jr., was a Sergeant with the Ambulance Service of the United States Army Medical Reserve Corps, and served with the French Fifth Division during World War I.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, and loose journal pages detailing Mitchell's decision to join the medical corps, camp life in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and his voyage to Europe. Correspondence from Mitchell describes France, Belgium, and Germany and their destruction, ambulance runs to the front, and the Armistice. Photographs portray war destruction in Belgium.
