Collection Description

Historical Note

Ward Morehouse was born in 1899 in Savannah, Georgia. He became a well-known drama critic, columnist, and playwright. In his early life, Morehouse worked for the Savannah Press and the Atlanta Journal. In 1919, he worked for several prominent newspapers in New York. He wrote three plays and helped write a few screenplays. He also had numerous articles printed in a wide variety of magazines and periodicals. In 1926, he began writing Broadway After Dark for the Sun.

Morehouse married four times and had two children, a daughter and a son. He died in New York City in 1967 at the age of 67, and was then buried in Statesboro, Georgia. Notably, his son has continued a similar line of work and publishes Broadway After Dark columns now himself.

The collection consists of papers of Ward Morehouse from 1879-1969 and includes photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, galley proofs, correspondence, posters, and manuscripts. Photographs are of stage and screen actors and actresses from the late 19th century to the 1950s. Clippings and scrapbooks pertain to Morehouse's columns, play and screen reviews, and theater openings.
