The collection consists of books, papers, correspondence, personal narratives, propaganda material, photographs, and artifacts
contributed by soldiers and families who have served with or are connected with soldiers who served with the Wolfhounds.
The bulk of the collection centers on the 27th Infantry Regiment in World War II and the Korean War. There are some materials
on Siberia and Vietnam and times in between, but the majority focus on the Pacific and Korea.
There are a significant number of documents and artifacts about the Wolfhound Pack Historical Society, anniversaries, reunions,
and relationships between veterans after their service.
There is a small but well-maintained collection of items and documents about the Holy Family Home in Japan.
There are a considerable number of books in the collection. Many are about the 27th Infantry Regiment, though some are on
more general topics, such as military campaigns and entire wars. Some are autobiographies or biographies; many are written
by Wolfhound veterans. The videos in the collection are similar. These are often interviews of Wolfhounds and videos about
certain military events.
The artifacts are original and similar attire and items from Wolfhounds in their military service.
There is a small assortment of unprocessed papers and artifacts that are primarily unarranged. These still focus on the 27th
Infantry Regiment. Most concentrate on the Wolfhounds in the Korean War.

This collection is comprised of one leaf of an Armenian Bible, stated to be from the early 12th Century.
Dealer's note: The text of this leaf is from a 5th century translation of the Bible by the Armenian prelate Maschdots Mesrob
(circa 354-441) and is in the Haikian alphabet of 38 characters. Of special interest here is the paper, claimed (in an accompanying
note) to have been manufactured in the Near East early in the 12th century, more than 150 years before Fabriano began making
paper in Italy. While it is conceivable that the dating here is correct, the presence of a watermark (a feature not in common
use at that time) suggests that the paper might have ben made later. The watermark, however, is not in Briquet.

Captain Thomas Mickleberry Merritt swords
|

Creator: |

Dates: |
1812-1865 |
|
|
Contents: |
The collection consists of three swords owned by Captain Thomas Mickleberry Merritt. His unit in the Civil War was Company
G, 2nd Georgia Regiment (Marion County) in Army of Tennessee.
1. The Officer's Heavy Straight Saber has a 37.5 inch steel blade and a right-handed swept brass hilt. This weapon, with accompanying
iron scabbard, was apparently manufactured in the late 18th or early 19th century. The blade is high quality steel, possibly
of German manufacture. It is centrally ridged along the length of the blade, creating the effect of a double-fuller along
both sides. In addition, there is a dorsal spine flattened some 30" from the hilt pointward. Along this spine, at the hilt,
is an engraved inscription. "M" is monogrammed in a circle. This is followed by "S[?]ture Imple du Klingenthal Juin 1812".
The swept hilts are made of brass, and bear a small stamped fleur-de-lis and the word "Versailles" along the rear sweep. The
grip, originally leather over corded wood, is largely devoid of leather. This is a weapon of exceptional quality.
2. Cavalry Officer's Heavy Saber has a 35 inch steel blade and a right-handed swept brass hilt. This weapon was manufactured
in New Orleans, Louisiana, in August of 1861 by Thomas, Griswold, & Co. The blade is characterized by hevay pitting and corrosion,
though the brass hilt seems relatively undamaged, save a bar break along the lead sweep.
3. Cavalry/Infantry Officer's Saber (Light) has a 35 inch steel blade and a right-handed swept brass hilt. This saber was
the personal property of Captain Thomas Mickleberry Merritt, and was given to the University of Georgia with a steel scabbard.
It is of a fairly common pattern, most closely representing the "Palmetto" type sabers of 1852, which were produced in Columbia,
South Carolina, by William Glaze & Company.

The collection consists of a genuine page from a book called Der Heiligen Leben Passional, or The Golden Legend, by Jacobus
de Voragine, printed by Koberger in Nuremberg in 1488. These illustrations are as a rule anonymous, the names of the engravers
being known only after the year 1500. The blocks of pear wood, on which these designs were cut, were "type high" and set into
the same form with the text and both were inked and printed together. The coloring was done by hand, the style being developed
on the model of the illuminations used as illustrations to the still earlier manuscripts.
