Collection Description

Historical Note

Rayburn Moore (1920-2006), son of Max Sabatsky Moore (1895-1979) and Sammie Lou Rayburn Moore, was born in Helena, Arkansas. He attended Hendrix College (Conway, Arkansas), Vanderbilt University, and Duke University. He was inducted into the Army in 1942 and stationed at several camps including Camp Ellis (IL). In 1943 he graduated from an officer candidate school (Army Administration School No. 3 in Gainesville, Florida) and was sent to the Philippines in 1945. Rayburn Moore was a Captain in the Adjuant General's Department. He married Margaret Bear in 1947. He was later a professor of English at the University of Georgia and the author and editor of several books.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of biographical information, correspondence from family and friends, Army papers, printed material, photographs, and artifacts. The correspondence includes World War II letters to Rayburn Moore from his family and friends and World War I letters from Max Moore in England to his wife. Max was a sergeant in the American Expeditionary Forces, Hospital Unit T, Medical Department. The artifacts include a World War II Army uniform, a World War I blue star banner, dog tags, medals, a man's watch, and an American flag.
