Abstract: The Ashley Callahan Collection of Political Ephemera consists of materials collected by independent decorative arts scholar and curator Ashley Callahan. The collection includes posters, signs, and a button, which document state campaigns from 2020 to 2022 as well as relations between the United States and the Soviet Union from 1988 to 1991.

Collection Description

Historical Note

Ashley Callahan is an independent decorative arts scholar and curator in Athens, Georgia. She holds a master's degree in the History of American Decorative Arts from Parsons School of Design and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Callahan was formerly a Curator of Decorative Arts at the Georgia Museum of Art and has authored multiple publications, including Southern Tufts: The Regional Origins and National Craze for Chenille Fashion (2015) and Georgia Bellflowers: The Furniture of Henry Eugene Thomas (2012). Callahan also curated the 2022 exhibition "Frankie Welch's Americana: Fashion, Scarves, and Politics" for display at the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries.

Scope and Content

The Ashley Callahan Collection of Political Ephemera consists of political campaign materials and posters documenting the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1980s and 1990s. The collection includes signs, posters, and a campaign button. A sign and button document the Georgia campaigns of Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock, and Stacey Abrams from 2020 to 2022. Four posters printed with Cyrillic text promote peaceful relations between the United States and the Soviet Union and were purchased by Callahan in Russia in 1989 while on a People to People Friendship Caravan tour.
