Collection Description

Historical Note

The Adams, Breedlove, Estes, Verner and affiliated families in this collection are from Newton and Walton Counties, Georgia. William J. Adams was in the general merchandising business with Adams Brothers, The Adams, Verners and Breedlove families had farming operations, G.C. Adams was in education and state politics, C.C. Estes ran a car sales and repair shop and was a Justice of the Peace, W.H. Adams ran a Buick dealership in Covington, and Henry Verner and Thomas R. Breedlove were involved with Walton EMC.

William J. Adams (1831-1895) and Susan Hurst (1833-1905) had sixteen children, several of whom are included in the collection. James M. Adams (1849-1931) married Nancy "Fratie" Malcom (1853-1937) whose daughter Ella America (1872-1948) married William L. Breedlove (1868-1938). D.J. Adams (1854-1939) was married to Sallie Harris (1858-1888), their children Julia, Fannie, and W.H. are included, as are children of his second wife Carrie Crawley (1857-1919), H.B., Lizzie, Rosalind and Temple. Brothers William A. Adams (1856-1930), Newton C. Adams (1860-1917) and H.B. Adams(1869-1937) are included, as are sisters Emma (1871-1957) and Ella Adams (1872-1954). G.C. Adams (1868-1949) married Lillian Green (1867-1952) and had seven children. He served on the Board of Education, was a school superintendent, a State Representative, and Commissioner of Agriculture. He started agriculture based school clubs in Newton County that folded into the 4-H Clubs of Georgia.

James F. Breedlove (1823-1902) married Amanda Bradley (1830-1901) and had ten children including William L. Breedlove (1851-1881) who married Ella Adams (1872-1948). Their son Thomas R. Breedlove (1868-1938) married Mattie Estes (1892-1961) and they had eight children. Their daughter Sara Davis (1927-2015) married Henry S. Verner (1924-2007).

Henry Scott Verner (1924-2007) was a farmer and businessman from Rutledge, Georgia. He married Sara Davis Breedlove and had five children. He began managing the Rutledge farm operations for Sara's father, T.R. Breedlove of Monroe, in 1949. Verner was a member of Walton EMC Board of Directors, serving from 1958 until 2003. Verner has also served as director of the Morgan County Farm Bureau, the Farmers Home Administration, and the Bank of Morgan County. He was chosen as the 1992 Commercial Cattlemen of the Year in Georgia, and Verner Farms was named a Centennial Family Farm in 1997.

James Iverson Estes (1852-1923) married Elizabeth "Maggie" Davis (1854-1926) and they had eight children including Charles C. Estes (1873-1955), who married Julia Adams (1880-1976). Their children were Evelyn (Mrs. T.J. Harwell) and Myrtle (Mrs. Reginald Robinson). His sister Minerva Estes (1882-1972) married Walter Knight. His sister Mattie Estes (1890-1982) married T.R. Breedlove (1892-1969), and their eight children included Sara D. (1927-2015), who married Henry S. Verner (1924-2007).

Scope and Content

This collection includes photographs, correspondence, farm records, legal documents, and ephemera of the Adams, Breedlove, Davies, Estes, McDonald and Verner families.
