Oral histories with members of the Albany Movement's civil rights campaign in southwest Georgia document that time period
as well as the local politics and initiatives in its aftermath.
"In November 1961, residents of Albany, Georgia, launched an ambitious campaign to eliminate segregation in all facets of
local life. The movement captured national attention one month later when local leaders invited Martin Luther King, Jr. to
join the protest. Despite King's involvement, the movement failed to secure concessions from local officials and was consequently
deemed unsuccessful by many observers. Subsequent appraisals, however, have identified the movement as a formative learning
experience for King and other civil rights organizers, and credited it with hastening the ultimate desegregation of Albany's
facilities, which occurred only one year following the movement's conclusion in August 1962." -- Civil Rights Digital Library

Paris Music Hall collection

|
Creator: |
Weldy, Max |
|
|
Dates: |
circa 1920-1939 |
|
|
Contents: |
The Paris Music Hall Collection comprises over 6,000 original renderings of costume designs and 1,000 original renderings
of curtain designs for the music halls of Paris from 1920 to 1938. The collection, acquired in 1968 by the Library, was originally
the property of Max Weldy who provided the elaborate costumes and curtains to the Folies Bergere, Moulin Rouge and other popular
cabarets and music halls. Weldy maintained a stable of young, extraordinarily imaginative designers who flocked to Paris from
all over Europe to establish a name for themselves. Among the first of Weldy's artists was Romain de Tirtoff, a fledgling
designer from Russia, who would later be internationally renowned as Erté.
After the owners and artistic directors of the music halls determined the annual theme for the shows, various tableaux were
created to fill an evening's entertainment. Most of these were simply spectacles serving as vehicles for the star artists
such as Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier, Josephine Baker, and the Dolly Sisters. The tableaux varied widely to include comic,
dramatic and historic subjects, but musical entertainment was always the focal point. The costumes reflected the themes such
as "the French Revolution", "Jewels", "The Garden of Metal", "The Seven Deadly Sins", "Flowers", as well as various animals,
food, and sports. Most of the sketches are in color, done on tracing paper or watercolor paper. A few have fabric swatches
attached. The collection includes designers such as Erté, Serge Kojan, Alex Shanks, Freddy Wittop, José Zamora, and Zig.

Most of the 44 photographs in this collection were taken by the White Studio of New York in the early 1920's. Some appeared
in the 1925 Pandora. Most are views of the campus and its buildings, but one individual and several group portraits are included.
Among noteworthy shots are a view of the arboretum that was replaced by Sanford Stadium, Herty Field being used for student
calisthenics, the Strahan House that was replaced by the Law Library, the loggia atop Memorial Hall, Soule Hall with the amphitheater
in front and the Sanford athletic field near the site of today's Miller Learning Center. This collection was originally in
one folder marked "Photographs, Undated" in box 3 of collection UGA 92-140, General Extension Papers. Three photographs of
class reunions in the 1950's seem out of place in the collection, but may explain how these photographs came to be included
in the General Extension files. They are stamped on the back with "Reprint may be ordered from Univ. of Ga. Photo Dept. Division
of Gen. Ext."
