Hardman was very active during his tenure in the Georgia House of Representatives and the State Senate. Co-authoring Georgia's
Prohibition bill and sponsoring the Conner Act, which established the Georgia College of Agriculture, are among as his primary
accomplishments. However, Hardman also introduced or sponsored other important legislative measures. He sponsored legislation
creating the State Board of Health, petitioned Congress to authorize a federal commission to conduct a drainage survey of
Georgia farmlands, and introduced a bill making rudimentary civic and agricultural education mandatory in Georgia public schools.
The files in this series contain correspondence relating to these and other legislative matters from Hardman's terms in the
House (1902-1906; 1909-1910) and State Senate (1907-1908). Papers from his last term in the House are not included. The series
is comprised of four subseries: correspondence, bills, speeches, and general information. Arrangement is chronological.

1862 John entered the Civil War, and the correspondence reflects the physical and mental strains the war put on its participants.
The letters from 1862-1865 were written while Savage served in the 28th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, where his regiment was
involved in the battle of Helena (Ark.) and the siege of Vicksburg (Miss.). His later letters describe in detail the battle
of Cold Harbor (Va.) while he was in the 36th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment.

The photographs within each of the albums often span a wide time period from around the 1870s to the 1930s. Most appear to
be from the 1890s to mid-1920s. The images are of numerous people from a variety of families.
There are a significant number of photographs of babies and children, which often have the age of the child on the back.
A few pictures of caretakers and children do exist. There are also several brides in their wedding gowns. Both men and women
are often dressed in formal attire. While some family and group photos are in the collection, the vast majority are formal
portraits of individuals or pairs taken by professional photographers across Georgia, most frequently based in Atlanta.
While two of the five albums have antique plastic covers, the last two have exquisite, genuine wooden covers. These are in
good condition and unique.

Lithograph of the University of Georgia

Dates: |

|
Contents: |
The collection consists of a print of Dr. Louis Moore's lithograph of the University of Georgia, which may have served as
the basis for the better known and more stylized "Gleason's Pictorial of May 13, 1854." Unfortunately time has been harsh
with the lithograph and it was trimmed to fit into a smaller frame, obliterating the name of the company producing the print
and the name of the artist. Illustrations using this print appear in older issues of the Georgia Alumni Record, so it is hoped
that at least one other and better preserved copy still exists somewhere. This copy, however, has additional noteworthy ties
to the University. It comes from "Tockwotton", the home of Louis Moore.

Lyndon B. Johnson Recordings and Transcripts of Conversations and Meetings is a partially complete collection of cassettes
and/or compact discs duplicating the original audio materials housed at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library. All
recordings containing conversations between President Johnson and Senator Richard B. Russell and transcripts of those conversations,
as well as many others, are duplicated here. Researchers interested in listening to these recordings or viewing the transcripts
of these recordings should first discern which tape or transcript is required by searching the recordings database located
on the website of the Johnson Presidential Library . The "tape number" in the database will correspond to the tape number
of the duplicate recording at the Russell Library, and the month and year of the recording will correspond to the transcript
on file at the Russell Library. These same recordings, as well as presidential recordings from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry
S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Richard Nixon, are available to listen to online via the Presidential
Recordings Program of the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.
