Collection Description

Historical Note

The Rutherford, Lipscomb, and Hutchins families are three strongly Southern families. The Lipscomb family moved to Georgia after the Civil War, although several male family members did serve in the Confederacy. The Rutherfords were residents of Georgia before, during, and after the Civil War. The Hutchins, however, seemed to have moved to the state around a decade after the conflict's end.

The Rutherford and Hutchins families intermarried in 1883 - Laura Williams Rutherford (b.1859) and Joshua Cornelius Hutchins (b.1854). They had four children who carried on the name. Their daughter, Laura Cobb Hutchins, married David Fleming Paddock, and donated the photographc albums in this collection.

The Lipscomb family is notable for Andrew Adgate Lipscomb (b.1816, d.1890), who served as Chancellor of the University of Georgia from 1860 to 1874. His son - named Andrew Adgate Lipscomb II (b.1850) - married Lamar Rutherford in the 1880s. She then became Lamar Rutherford Lipscomb. These two would live in Arlington, Virginia, but both came from Athens, Georgia. Their daughter, named after Lamar, unfortunately died at the age of 5. She is pictured within at least one album with her mother.

Lamar Rutherford's aunt was Mildred Lewis Rutherford, a well-known Southern author, leader of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and strong proponent of Confederate memorial activities. Her maternal uncles are the renown Howell Cobb and T.R.R. Cobb, both of whom served in the Civil War. Mildred's sister, Mary Ann Rutherford, also married into the Lipscomb family, marrying Francis Adgate Lipscomb in 1869.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of five photo albums that include mostly unidentified photographs of the Lipscomb, Rutherford, and Hutchins families. These albums are from the estate of Laura Hutchins Paddock ("Aunt Lollipop"). Before her marriage, her name was Laura Cobb Hutchins. Her mother was Laura Williams Rutherford, and her father was Joshua Cornelius Hutchins. The Rutherford, Lipscomb, and Hutchins families were closely related and very friendly with each other.

The photographs within each of the albums often span a wide time period from around the 1870s to the 1930s. Most appear to be from the 1890s to mid-1920s. The images are of numerous people from a variety of families.

There are a significant number of photographs of babies and children, which often have the age of the child on the back. A few pictures of caretakers and children do exist. There are also several brides in their wedding gowns. Both men and women are often dressed in formal attire. While some family and group photos are in the collection, the vast majority are formal portraits of individuals or pairs taken by professional photographers across Georgia, most frequently based in Atlanta.

While two of the five albums have antique plastic covers, the last two have exquisite, genuine wooden covers. These are in good condition and unique.
