Collection Description

Historical Note

The term used in the sign which makes up this collection, "True Americanism," derives from a letter that Theodore Roosevelt wrote three days before his death on January 6, 1919. This letter, written to the American Defense Society, was Roosevelt's last public message. In the letter, Roosevelt stresses the importance of devoted Americanism among all American citizens, especially immigrants. Roosevelt's message is a reaction to the tide of southern and eastern European immigrants entering the United States following the end of World War I.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a framed sign. The sign reads, in part, "This store stands for True Americanism," using language from a 1919 letter written by Theodore Roosevelt just before his death.
