Historical Note

Lynwood Park was an early 20th century subdivision of Athens, Georgia located in the Hill Street, Glenhaven Street, Hancock Avenue, and Billups Street area. Lynwood Park was platted and established in 1906, and several lots were immediately purchased by notable Georgia residents. Many of the deeds held with strict restrictions on the cost of buildings on the properties; buildings had to cost $1500 or more. Since Lynwood Park was situated between Milledge Avenue and the city limits, the area became like a small town unto itself.

In 1913, this area became an exclusively African American residential area. By 1918, about one sixth of Athens' Black population lived in Lynwood Park, and many owned their own homes. Both professional and unskilled workers lived in the area, though in slightly different sections; the elite lived on higher lots, and the unskilled lived in lower lots. Due the nature of the community, they built up the area, establishing stores, churches (such as Ebenezer Baptist Church), and even hospitals for local residents. Some of early Athens' most prominent African Americans, such as Dr. T. J. Elder, a prominent educator, and Dr. Andrew Jones, a physician, lived in this area.

Scope and Content

One intact lottery ticket. On the front, both segments of the ticket read "FREE LOT TICKET" and are numbered "6," but one side was intended to be kept and the other deposited. The back states that the holder of the ticket "if over 15 years of age" can "participate in a drawing for a valuable building lot to be given away at the Big Auction Sale at LYNWOOD PARK, Athens, Ga., Sept. 4th, 1906..."
