109 Title:   Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. remarks on Robert E. Lee  Requires cookie*
Creator:   Jones, Charles C. (Charles Colcock), 1831-1893
  Dates:   1876
  Contents:
The collection consists of one bound manuscript compiled by Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. entitled "Letter of General Robert E. Lee tendering to the President of the Confederate States his resignation of the command of the Army of Northern Virginia: with explanatory remarks by Charles C. Jones, Jr." Thus, the main body of the manuscript is Jones' transcription of Lee's famous letter. More importantly, however, the volume has tipped in six prints of Lee, six of Jefferson Davis, two of General George Meade, and one each of Generals P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, A.P. Hill, T.J. Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston, John H. Morgan, and J.E.B. Stuart. Views included are two of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Capitol at Richmond, and two unusual views of Richmond, as well as a folding map. In addition three letters are tipped in: 1. opposite page 4. This letter from General G. E. Pickett to General Braxton Bragg, dated 26 April 1864, one page, discusses military matters preparatory to the Battle of the Crater and as such is historically important. 2. opposite page 6. Note signed by Robert E. Lee and addressed to President Davis informing him the the "Florida Brigade cannot be spared from the army." 3. opposite page 11. Note signed by Davis and dated 25 August 1863 referring to the above. Apparently both 2 and 3 are endorsements from the same original piece and separated by Jones for inclusion in this volume. The volume also has clippings of Jones' "A Piece of Secret History" (Scribner's Magazine, February 1876) and a review of this article (The Cycle, 29 January 1876).

  Creator:   Jones, Charles Colcock, 1804-1863
  Dates:   1828-1829
  Contents:
A notebook containing over three hundred pages of notes in Reverend Jones' hand, made during his middle year at Andover Seminary. The entire work discusses "Christian Theology," but it is broken into two sections: the first of 247 pages is Jones' own course outline developed on the advice of Dr. Porter, who suggested to Jones that he "form a sketch of the subject, arranged in your own manner - then read on it extensively as time will permit - hear the lectures & recitations - and then write down the entire results" ; the second of 61 pages is the note-taking done in Dr. Wood's lectures on Christian Theology. Skillfully written and organized, this early example of Jones' scholarship exemplifies the meticulousness with which he proceeded and is valuable to show the formative influences of his theological training. In the decade preceding the Civil War, few theologians were more influential than the Georgian Charles Colcock Jones. For further information on this distinguished minister, consult "Children of Pride" by Robert Manson Myers.

  Dates:   1920-1970

The collection consists of letters, pictures, clippings, manuscripts, programs, printed materials, notes, file cards, and other materials concerning the life, career, and writings of the late Dr. Clarence Leonard Jordan, founder of Koinonia Farms, an agricultural missionary enterprise, and inter-racial community. The early letters, largely from Clarence Jordan to his mother, are most revealing as to the character of the man. The many clippings and printed materials about Clarence Jordan and Koinonia also give insight into the community life, and the programs indicate the wide demand for Dr. Jordan as a speaker. The collection also includes the manuscripts, both written and typed, with annotations and/or corrections and revisions of many of Dr. Jordan's writings, particularly the Cotton Patch versions of the Gospels. The collection is arranged into folders but for the most part it has been described at container level.
