USS Richard B. Russell (SSN 687), the thirty-seventh and final Sturgeon class nuclear attack submarine to be built, had its
keel laid at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Newport News, Virginia on October 19, 1971. The ship was christened
Richard B. Russell (SSN 687) on January 12, 1974 by Elizabeth Talmadge and Herman Talmadge was the speaker at the launching
ceremony. During its eighteen years of service USS Richard B. Russell was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, seven Navy
Unit Commendations, and seven Battle Efficiency "E" awards. On June 24, 1994 the ship was decommissioned. This collection
includes several flags, one model of the USS Russell, a scrapbook, stickers and patches, and inactivation ceremony programs.

The collection consists of typescripts, manuscript notes, proof sheets, and correspondence concerning "Sketches of the early
history of Madison County" and "Autobiography of Rev. Groves H. Cartledge."
Reverend Groves Harrison Cartledge made great efforts towards cataloging the history of Madison County, Ga., and the struggles
of the pioneer 18th century minister Reverend John Newton of Hopewell Presbytery. Historical sketches mention many early
Georgia families, Presbyterian churches in Northeastern Georgia, and include comments on such varied subjects as depredations
by th Indians, soil conservation, difficulties of pioneer life, etc.
Jessie Mize, Virginia and Charlotte Newton, and the Rev. Samuel Cartledge compiled this collection. The correspondence sheds
further light on the publishing history and the background research performed by this dedicated group. Also included is a
sizable amount of genealogical material on the Cartledge family and allied families of the Madison County area.

Jon Nielsen (1912-1986) was a Danish-American artist and illustrator. He has illustrated over 200 children's books and textbooks,
taught college art, and co-authored the children's book "The Wishing Pearl and Other Tales of Vietnam" with his wife, Kay.
His works have been featured in galleries in New York and Florida. In the 1960s during the Vietnam War, he was asked by the
US State Department to travel to Vietnam and sketch portraits to entertain the soldiers. This collection contains 70 photographs
taken by Nielsen as studies for his ink drawings. Some of the six drawings in the collection were later used in his book "Artist
in South Vietnam," published in 1969.

There are a few letters from their children and their friends. Although Nisbet's letters deal mainly with family matters,
he also discusses politics and fellow politicians, especially while in Washington, D.C.
The collection also includes two framed oil portraits and a pecan desk chair. One of the paintings is of Amanda Battle, dated
1841, and with the frame is 36 1/2" x 32," the other is of E.A. Nisbet and is 20 1/4" x 17". The chair, which has a carved
back with four spindles and an upholstered seat, belonged to Amanda Nisbet.

The collection consists of a single account book listing patient names, services, charges, and payments for Dr. William C.
Nixon's medical practice in Floyd County, Georgia. His medical services included the dressing and setting of broken limbs
as well as removing splinters from them, the extraction of teeth, conducting of uterine exams, and the attendance of women
in parturition. Among the medicines he prescribed were opium, morphine, quinine, and paregoric. A cross-reference of Census
records reveal that Dr. Nixon treated African-American patients, including members of the Zuber family.

and printed material. The correspondence includes letters to William J. Northen regarding the establishment of the town of
Fitzgerald, Georgia; letters regarding an apparent scandal involving the Farmers' Alliance and Leonidas Livingston; William
J. Northen's letters home as he traveled around Georgia in 1907 promoting racial harmony; and two Civil War letters from brothers
William and John Henry Neel of the 15th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Company K. The writings contain a journal by
William J. Northen in which he writes of his trip to Tallulah Falls, speeches at Mercer University, his 21st birthday, death
of his brother, and a letter to his sister regarding conditions at the end of the Civil War. Farm accounts are also included
in the journal.
Also of interest are slave documents and bills of sale; receipts from Mercer University and the Georgia Baptist Convention
when Peter Northen was treasurer; Ruth Northen's photo album containing University of Georgia photographs from 1911-1912 and
other travel photographs; and an 1801 indenture between the Catawba Indians and Thomas Neel for land in York County, South
Carolina. The following items were separated from the collection: walking cane without the handle and one square back wooden
chair with cane seat is housed in Organic storage.
