The Annie Beth Abney Collection of Nathaniel E. Harris Research Files consists of photographs and correspondence gathered by Abney while writing a master's thesis at the University of Georgia on Nathaniel Harris who served as Governor of Georgia from 1915 to 1917. Prior to his term as governor he also served in the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate, and as a judge in the Superior Court of the Macon Circuit. Harris was an attorney by profession. The photographs document Harris family gravesites and Governor Harris's affiliation with the Mulberry Street Methodist Church (Macon, GA) where he was an active member for fifty years. Correspondence in the collection includes letters written by Governor Harris; Warren Roberts, a fellow church member; and Governor Harris's son, Walter Harris. The subject matter of the letters centers on Harris's church activities and personal family matters dated 1866 (copy) and 1957.

Gillis served as the Director of the State Highway Board for much of the 1950s and 1960s, helping to create the state's modern road system. He was also the manager of Ernest Vandiver's successful 1958 gubernatorial campaign, the chairman of the State Democratic Executive Committee in 1939-1941, and a major figure in the early history of Treutlen County. The collection is of interest to those studying highways and Georgia politics, especially in the late 1930s and during the Herman Talmadge administration (1948-1955), as well as the Vandiver campaign and disputes over highway construction in the late 1960s.

The Lamartine G. Hardman photograph collection consists of 624 images. The images date from the mid-1800s to 1953. The collection begins with early images of his wife's family--the Griffins, from Valdosta, GA--and ends with photos taken during a world trip by Mrs. Hardman in 1953. Subjects of the photos include the Griffin immediate and extended family, Griffin family vacations, and Hardman and Emma Griffin's courtship. The collection also includes photographs of Hardman's immediate and extended family, Hardman and Griffin family residences and property, and Hardman family vacations. Included are formal portraits of Governor Hardman and informal photographs of Hardman engaged in medical, agricultural and leisure pursuits. Of particular interest are photographs of Hardman with New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, President Calvin Coolidge, and aviator Charles Lindbergh.

The M. Louise McBee Papers documents the political activities of Louise McBee who served as a democratic legislator in the House of Representatives from 1991 until 2004. WSB-TV, Georgia Giant Documentary Files, Series VI. Audiovisual Materials consists of 139 16mm films that were created in the production of Richard Russell: A Georgia Giant, in 1970. The reels include negative, internegative, magnetic sound, optical sound, answer print, and composite print reels. Additionally, one 2-inch videotape contains an introduction to the documentary by Herman Talmadge, aired on WSB-TV when the documentary was shown. Five Umatic videotapes and 11 VHS videotapes, containing copies of the final production, were made by the Russell Library in the 1980s and 1990s, and integrated into the collection in 2011. The full-length Georgia Giant runs two hours and 48 minutes, while the shorter classroom version is 34 minutes long. User copies are available only for the finished productions.

The Eva C. Galambos Files on the City of Sandy Springs document the history and eventual incorporation of the City of Sandy Springs in 2005. Debate over the incorporation began in the 1970s when the city of Atlanta attempted to use a state law to force annexation of Sandy Springs. In response, the Committee for Sandy Springs was formed in 1975. Eva Galambos was president of Committee for Sandy Springs (1975-2005) leading the effort to incorporate Sandy Springs. She is a co-founder and former secretary of Sandy Springs Revitalization; founder of Sandy Springs Clean and Beautiful; chairwoman of services committee for the Sandy Springs Council of Neighborhoods; and founder of Sandy Springs Civic Roundtable. Galambos was elected the first mayor of Sandy Springs in 2005. The files include clippings, correspondence, memoranda, announcements and flyers, meeting minutes, articles of incorporation, subject files, and publications related to the incorporation of Sandy Springs.

The collection documents the growth and development of the City of Macon primarily during the administration of Mayor Charles L. Bowden (1938-1947). Included are City of Macon financial statements (1928, 1937-1938); Macon Hospital Commission files (1945-1952); correspondence and photographs documenting the commission of USS Macon (1945) and the Macon premiere of God is my Co-pilot (1945); copies of Bowden's speeches and radio announcements; and general correspondence. Of note is the correspondence with Carl Vinson, especially in relation to the commissioning of the USS Macon. Correspondence between Bowden, his wife, Urney Fields Bowden, and their children, Charlotte and Patsy, illustrate family life in Macon in the 1930s and 1940s. The Bowden and Fields families are documented through genealogical research files and correspondence (1883-1889) between Urney Bowden's grandparents, W. G. Fields and Emma Massey (-1902). The papers include correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, financial reports, speeches and announcements, publications and clippings, and memorabilia.

This collection documents Mary Frances Early, the first African American to graduate from the University of Georgia. Ms. Early's transcripts, grades, financial aid documents, photographs, diaries, and notebooks illustrate her student life. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1962, with her master's in music education, she worked for the Atlanta Public Schools and was involved in local, state and national educational organizations. Ms. Early's involvement with organizations such as Georgia Music Educators Association, National Endowment for the Arts, and Music Educators National Conference is illustrated by correspondence, photographs, and speeches. Also included are materials regarding her education at Clark Atlanta University (1957) and honors received from the University of Georgia Alumni Association and College of Education. The collection contains correspondence, photographs, programs and event files, official documents from the University of Georgia, diaries, and notebooks.

The majority of the collection dates from Sorrells' time at UGA. These items include 10 original debates prepared and presented by Sorrells as well as photographs and other artifacts. In addition to materials from his school years, the collection contains such items as a 50th class reunion badge and correspondence with Benjamin E. Mays in regards to Mays' 1968 eulogy at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s funeral. Sorrells wife, Lola Ruth (McLeroy) Sorrells, is also represented in the 'The William Holman Sorrells Papers". Mrs. Sorrells' Normal School diploma and a CD containing scans of her early 20th century "Memory Book" are found in this collection.

The collection consists of numerous photographs, correspondence and publications that help document the long history of the Forestry School and its influence on Georgia's Forestry Industry. Included are materials that range from the earliest days of the Forestry School up through the present day. Also found in this collection are photographs from 1901 that show Native Americans in traditional ceremonial wear, the original design sketches for "Woodsy Owl" and a copy of a signed photograph of Robert D. Farris and President Bush. Many of the documents pertain to the publication of Bob Izlar's book The Centennial History of Forestry in Georgia: A Pictorial Journey. In fact the originals for most of the graphics found in that book are located within this collection.

University Archives obtained these materials from Dean Tate's son, Jeff Tate of Athens Georgia. Much of the collection was removed for preservation from two scrapbooks assembled after Tate's death by his wife, the late Susan Frances Barrow Tate (1908-2003). Along with photographs documenting Tate and his family there are views of the University and University activities, materials related to University Chancellor David C. Barrow and Dean Tate's track shoes from his record setting days as a student.
