The collection consists of papers related to the Fontaine family and related families. These materials were used by Dr. McAlexander
to co-write the book, Francis Fontaine, The Builder, 1721-1785 : His ancestors and descendents and their connections / by
Hugh McAlexander, Richard Douglas McCrum, Dan Morse Woodliff. The items are mostly genealogical research made up of photocopies,
portraits, and published materials. Also included is a copy of the finished book. The arrangement of the collection follows
the arrangement of the finished book.

The collection consists of correspondence, writings, business papers, and printed material. Most of the business correspondence
concerns Stewart & Fontaine Co., merchants in Columbus, Georgia. The family and personal correspondence is from both the Shorter
and Fontaine families. There is also some Civil war correspondence from Charles S. Shorter, George H. Shorter, and others
who were probably their friends. The business paper include deeds, land grants and various accounts.
