Scope and content
The Senate Staff Oral History Project documents the professional careers and reflections of individuals who served on the
staffs of Georgia's United States Senators from Richard B. Russell, Jr. to the present. Interview participants include members
of legislative and committee staffs who worked in Washington D.C. and Georgia. Most interviewees held one or more senior positions
including, but not limited to, administrative assistant (or chief of staff), staff director, legal counsel, legislative aide,
legislative director, policy analyst, press secretary, regional director, and scheduler. The collection documents the personal
experiences and insights of these staff members as they relate to their experience working for U.S. Senators from Georgia,
the role of the United States Senate in government, the Senate as a workplace, and memorable campaigns and legislative debates.
It also includes assessments of the legacies left by Georgia's U.S. Senators with regard to politics and public policy in
Georgia and the United States.

|
|
Contents: |
This collection consists of the Senatus Academicus' bound handwritten minutes from 1799 to 1842. Inside the back cover of
the Senatus Academicus volume are two documents that illustrate the precarious nature of the historical record. The oldest,
a note from 1857, specifies that President Alonzo Church is to be given custody of the minutes of both the Trustees and the
Senatus, with the exception of the current volume of Senatus minutes that will be kept in the Executive Offices of the state
capitol, then in Milledgeville. Pasted over the 1857 note is an 1893 letter from Governor W. J. Northern to Augustus Longstreet
Hull, the Secretary and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, regretting that those later Senatus minutes cannot be found "amid
the debris of books, pamphlets, etc., etc., that was brought over to the new state building."
The collection also includes three separate transcriptions that date from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Oral histories with members of the Albany Movement's civil rights campaign in southwest Georgia document that time period
as well as the local politics and initiatives in its aftermath.
"In November 1961, residents of Albany, Georgia, launched an ambitious campaign to eliminate segregation in all facets of
local life. The movement captured national attention one month later when local leaders invited Martin Luther King, Jr. to
join the protest. Despite King's involvement, the movement failed to secure concessions from local officials and was consequently
deemed unsuccessful by many observers. Subsequent appraisals, however, have identified the movement as a formative learning
experience for King and other civil rights organizers, and credited it with hastening the ultimate desegregation of Albany's
facilities, which occurred only one year following the movement's conclusion in August 1962." -- Civil Rights Digital Library

Contents: |
The collection consists of copies of official letters and court records relative to Spanish colonial affairs in the Southeast
(especially Georgia). The letters consist of correspondence between army officers or local officials stationed in Georgia
and Florida, and their superiors in Spain and deal with petitions and reports of work and contain valuable historical and
ethnological information on Spanish relations with the Indians and the English and on the country in general. The court records
deal largely with the testimony of soldiers who accompanied early Spanish expeditions. Usually they were called for to support
new exploratory projects from Spain, or to settle responsibility of adverse military incidents in Georgia. There is no English
edition of these documents, but Lanning refers to many of them in his book Spanish Missions of Georgia, and John Swanton translated
several in his United States Bureau of Ethnology (USBAE) bulletin Early History of the Creek Indians and Their Neighbors.
Several of the documents were translated at various times and by various people. The translations were located in the Archaeology
Department of the University of Georgia in 1940, but the University of Georgia Libraries do not have the translations. The
Libraries do have translations of some of the documents and letters, done by Miss Raquel van der Pall, a graduate student
assistant in Special Collections in 1955. These translations are in folders 1 and 2 labeled "Van der Pall Translations."
