58 Title:   Reverend Charles Colcock Jones, Sr. notebook  Requires cookie*
  Creator:   Jones, Charles Colcock, 1804-1863
  Dates:   1828-1829
  Contents:
A notebook containing over three hundred pages of notes in Reverend Jones' hand, made during his middle year at Andover Seminary. The entire work discusses "Christian Theology," but it is broken into two sections: the first of 247 pages is Jones' own course outline developed on the advice of Dr. Porter, who suggested to Jones that he "form a sketch of the subject, arranged in your own manner - then read on it extensively as time will permit - hear the lectures & recitations - and then write down the entire results" ; the second of 61 pages is the note-taking done in Dr. Wood's lectures on Christian Theology. Skillfully written and organized, this early example of Jones' scholarship exemplifies the meticulousness with which he proceeded and is valuable to show the formative influences of his theological training. In the decade preceding the Civil War, few theologians were more influential than the Georgian Charles Colcock Jones. For further information on this distinguished minister, consult "Children of Pride" by Robert Manson Myers.

While History generally has materials relating to Russell's interest in the subject, specifically the Civil War, Russell occasionally designated certain items to be placed here. For example, at his direction, research and strategy files from the 1960 civil rights debates are located here. Miscellaneous has a significant amount of correspondence from personal friends. Trips contains correspondence and material on all of Senator Russell's trips including those made in his capacity as a member or chairman of a senate committee. For example, correspondence and material from Russell's 1943 global tour of the war front as chairman of a special senate committee to investigate overseas military bases demonstrate the senator's work on such assignments. During many of these overseas trips prior to 1950, Russell had very revealing correspondence with his mother, which is included. Trips are filed under year in which they were made. If more than one trip was made within a year, the trips were filed alphabetically by country within the year.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series VI. Political not only spans the entire senate career of Russell but also carries over the gubernatorial office with the 1932 senatorial campaign and the early senate office procedures through Russell's office filing reorganization circa 1943. The Political series is a rich source of documentation for studying political campaigns in the mid-twentieth century. The campaign files cover Senator Russell's campaigns of 1932, 1936, 1942, 1948, 1954, 1960, and 1966. In addition to the senatorial campaign files, the series contains files documenting Russell's unsuccessful 1952 race for United States president. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books. The Special Name files contain information at a particular point in time on individuals whom Senator Russell considered of enough interest to warrant an individual folder. Such individuals include Lyndon B. Johnson, Eugene Talmadge, Charles Crisp, Herman E. Talmadge, Ralph McGill, Strom Thurmond, Orval Faubus, and Barry Goldwater, among others.

173 Title:   Robert G. Stephens, Jr. collection of Clement Anselm Evans material  Requires cookie*
Creator:   Stephens, Robert G. (Robert Grier), 1913-
  Dates:   1830-1904
  Contents:
The collection consists of diaries, speeches and an autograph book of Clement A. Evans. The first diary is inscribed "C.A. Evans, 31st Georgia Regiment, Gordon's Brigade, Early's Division, Ewell's Corps." The beginning of the diary is a ledger used to keep accounts of regimental supplies from 1862-1863, and includes some sketches. The second part transitions into a full diary about Evans' daily experiences in the war during 1864. Final pages of the diary include a handwritten roster of students of Law School, Augusta, Georgia, 1833-1859. The second diary contains a list of fees and commissions of C.A. Evans, Stewart County, Georgia, dated 1860-1861. The diary also contains entries regarding Atlanta Trinity Church, 1871-1874. The diaries dated 1903-1904 are rather extraordinary in design. Clement A. Evans, Sarah Lee Evans, and Lucy Evans all write on the same page for each day. Some of their notes mention each other. Sarah Lee and Lucy write more about Sunday school and home life, and Clement writes about state business and anniversaries of Confederate leaders and Civil War battles. In January 1904, Clements comments extensively on General John Brown Gordon's illness, death, and funeral. Likewise, he talks about his visits with Stephen Dill Lee. The family does split up throughout the year, with Clement staying in Augusta and the girls staying in Atlanta. Clement often discusses business with the Board of Pardon Commission. The collection also consists of The Life of Nathanael Greene, Major-General in the Army of the Revolution, published in 1858; two oration books; and an autograph book. The autograph book contains autographs of federal governmental officials, secretaries, Supreme Court officials, congressmen, and territorial delegates. Some names include Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy W. Hayes, M.R. Waite, Stephen J. Field, Joseph P. Bradley, John M. Harlan, Alexander H. Stephens, Eppa Hunton, and George C. Cabell.

This longleaf pine catface was removed from a farm in Lexsy, Emanuel County, GA started by Jordan Clinton Yeomans. Pine resin is collected from a tree by removing the surface bark with a series of diagonal hack marks. As the tree releases resin to seal the de-barked area, the direction of the hack marks channel the resin into a container fixed to the tree. The term "catface," used to describe a section of a tree that has been used for resin harvesting, derives from the resemblance of the hack marks to the whiskers of a cat.

Consists of one letter written by R.W. McCormick at Oglethorpe University and sent to his friend "Rachel." McCormick writes about the inauguration of Governor Herschel V. Johnson on November 7, 1855 in Milledgeville, Georgia. He writes that many in attendance represented the "beauty and chivalry of the Empire State of the South." The letter also describes that the number of women in attendance was "so numerous that they occupied most of the seats so that the legislators were obliged to stand." At the end of the letter, McCormick also gives a detailed and unflattering description of Robert Toombs and Alexander Stephens, who were both in attendance. The author of the letter is probably Robert Warnock McCormick, who attended Oglethorpe University at this time according to Allen P. Tankersley's 1951 book College Life at Old Oglethorpe. McCormick was a pastor, who lived from 1828-1879, according to the Necrological Reports and Annual Proceedings of the Alumni Association of Princeton Theological Seminary, Volume 1 by the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1891.
