The Miscellaneous File acts as a partial name cross-reference file for Series I. Legislative, IV. Personal, V. Political,
and VI. Post Office. It is a partial cross-reference file because not everything that is in the Miscellaneous File is in the
series it cross-references, and vice versa. The Miscellaneous File may only have a copy of Pilcher's reply to a letter, the
letter but no reply, or both the letter and its reply together. Individuals may be found under their own names or under the
organization they represent. The files in the series reflect constituent opinions on the topics of the day, their requests
for information and assistance, various projects for the benefit of the Second District that Pilcher undertook, and Pilcher's
relationship with both federal and state agencies. Items of special interest include letters to and from U.S. and state legislators
such as Richard B. Russell, Herman Talmadge, Carl Vinson, E. L. Forrester, Iris Blitch, and J. Willis Conger (State Senator,
8th District); material from Pilcher's Executive Assistant, John W. Ellis; a 1958 letter from Pilcher to the National Historical
Wax Museum in Washington, D.C., detailing an anecdote about Carl Vinson; the Griffin Bell file, concerning his appointment
to the 5th Circuit judgeship--he later became Attorney General (1977-1979) under President Jimmy Carter; and material about
the Atlantic Union, a plan to create a commonwealth including North America and Western Europe in which Pilcher was interested,
and about one of its most ardent advocates, Mrs. Chase S. Osborne.

The seventh grade pilot course, MAN AND SOCIETY, part of the University of Minnesota's K-12 Project Social Studies (PSS) curriculum,
was one of several Project Social Studies curricula funded around the United States as a result of the National Education
Defense Act of 1958 (US Office of Education - Project No. HS - 045). Curricular revision at the K-12 level was thought, at
the time, to be important to improving the competitive edge of the United States during the Cold War. Judith Preissle (then
Kasper) was selected to lead a group of 5 teachers at Grass Junior High School in West St. Paul, Minnesotabe in implementing
this curriculum in the seventh grade. The curriculum aimed to introduce students to major concepts in anthropology and sociology
and introduced students to the concept of relating human biological structure to social behaviour.
This collection contains the social studies curriculum, overhead projector images, hand written notes, and other documentation
of its facilitation. Throughout the documents are many handwritten notes and marginalia entered by Dr. Priessle. These notes
represent commentaries on preparation for class, as well as notes taken after the materials were used with students in the
classroom.
These materials are important because they sho what kinds of experimental social studies curricula were being developed in
the late 1960s and early 1970s. They will be of interest to educational historians, social studies education scholars, and
anyone doing historical research on diversity and advocacy work in K-12 schools. These materials may also be relevant to
anthropologists and sociologists studying how ideas from their disciplines are used within K-12 school curriculum.

The collection consists of a portion of the material given to the University of Georgia by the Georgia branch of the W.P.A.
upon its termination in 1941. Most of the material in the collection was gathered from areas within the University of Georgia
Libraries Special Collections Department, such as the Georgia Room vertical file and the Manuscripts Department. As one of
the main purposes of the project was to preserve historical data relating to Georgia, the papers consist of transcribed legal
documents, summaries of newspaper stories, personal interviews, and accounts of social and cultural events. The topics are
extremely diverse, and represent only a sampling of the subjects covered by the project. The two main sections of the collection
are the city and county files. Prominent in this area are several subheadings devoted to cultural concerns. These include
sections covering Atlanta theater, arts, and a well documented section covering opera performances presented in Atlanta from
1866 through 1940. The county files document the establishment of each county in Georgia and include historic events and/or
points of interest. Also included are a group of interviews with ex-slaves from around the state and two folders of general
folklore relating to slavery. Another section of note includes colonial legal records (wills, deeds, receipts, etc.), but
the records do extend into the mid 1800s. These records include transcriptions of Georgia House Journals, Executive Council
Minutes, Governor's correspondence, Military affairs, Indian treaties, Indian depredation records, etc.
