Creator: |
Abney, George M., 1930-2002 |
|
|
Dates: |
1930-2002 |
|
|
Contents: |
The collection consists of two scrapbooks, one concerning Georgia in general and one on the Atlanta area in particular. Both
books contain newspaper clippings and reproduced photographs. They both seem to herald from the late 1930s and early 1940s.
Both scrapbooks contain information from the 1939-1940 time period about the Civil War.
Book 1 focuses on Georgia and numerous places within the state. It was badly deteriorated so it was dismantled and placed
into two oversized folders within Oversized Box 1. The 107 pages of the scrapbook have persisted into its deconstructed form.
Some of these are images drawn by George Abney, and a good number of others are newspaper articles about events and places
in Georgia. Several seem to overlap with items found in Book 2.
Book 2 concentrates on Atlanta and Georgia materials. It is fully intact and in good condition. The clippings date from 1939
to 1940. Most focus on Atlanta and its commercial and residential areas. However, a good number are about other parts of Atlanta,
such as vacations to parks, restored forts, the tornado that touched down in Albany, and many rural areas where farming was
the main feature (cotton, tobacco, turpentine, and apples are the most prominent crops). Likewise, logging, mining and corn-shucking
appear in the scrapbook. Images and articles about local entertainment and shopping are included. Several debutants and the
Gone with the Wind Premier also feature in this scrapbook.
The rotograuvure set contains some pictures of World War II, a few of World War I, some clippings on Thomas Watson, and also
some of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's visit to the University of Georgia.

|
Contents: |
This collection consists of the Senatus Academicus' bound handwritten minutes from 1799 to 1842. Inside the back cover of
the Senatus Academicus volume are two documents that illustrate the precarious nature of the historical record. The oldest,
a note from 1857, specifies that President Alonzo Church is to be given custody of the minutes of both the Trustees and the
Senatus, with the exception of the current volume of Senatus minutes that will be kept in the Executive Offices of the state
capitol, then in Milledgeville. Pasted over the 1857 note is an 1893 letter from Governor W. J. Northern to Augustus Longstreet
Hull, the Secretary and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, regretting that those later Senatus minutes cannot be found "amid
the debris of books, pamphlets, etc., etc., that was brought over to the new state building."
The collection also includes three separate transcriptions that date from the 1930s to the 1970s.

note
English cartographer Thomas Jefferys (d. 1771) printed this map in May 1755, at an early stage in the French and Indian War.
He based this map on the earlier Amerique Septentrionale (1746), by the French cartographer Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville
(1692-1782). Largely serving the purposes of wartime propaganda, the map depicts, outlined in yellow, French inroads into
the rich, fur-bearing regions around the Great Lakes. Accompanying text details the histories of "English Title to their Settlements
on the Continent," and also "French Incroachments (sic)" on the same territory. The text describes the Iroquois Confederacy
as British subjects, in accordance with the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), and mentions that these Natives are available as British
allies against the French in North America.; Texts: "French Incrouchments," upper left; "English Title to their Settlements...",
lower right; Shows the East coast from Labrador to northern Florida, and the interior as far west as the Mississippi River
Valley.; Relief shown pictorially; From: Jefferys, T. The Natural and Civil History of the French Dominion in N. &; S. America.
London, 1760, Part I, p. 134; DeRenne, 1207; Publication: [London] : Published according to Act by Thos. Jefferys, geographer
to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales near Charing Cross

Judge Harley Langdale of Valdosta, Georgia, along with 900 other men from the Southern turpentine industry established the
American Turpentine Farmers Association (ATFA) in March of 1936. ATFA was formed to represent the interests of gum naval stores
factors, producers, and dealers in the United States "turpentine belt" (Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina,
Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas). Activities of ATFA document the interconnection of land use
and environmental stewardship to the broader issues and policies of modern Georgia's rural development. The American Turpentine
Farmers Association Minute Books provide the administrative record of the organization. The minute books are available online
at http://russelldoc.galib.uga.edu/atfa/.

Atkins, Thomas Washington, 1835-1863 |
|
|
Dates: |
1856-1864, 2006 |
|
|
Contents: |
The collection consists of a manuscript, letters and diaries. The manuscript was edited by Joseph Henry Hightower Moore and
is titled "Oak Lawn: War-Time Letters of the Atkins Family and the Plantation Diary of James Lewis Adams." Part One of the
manuscript contains transcriptions of all the letters and detailed information about the letter writers and their relationship
to Thomas Washington Atkins. There are also chapters on Atkins family history, Oak Lawn plantation, and antebellum Henry County
society, culture, and politics. Part Two contains transcriptions of the diaries of James Lewis Adams and includes chapters
on his family, his neighbors, and Oak Lawn plantation. Only the months of January, April, June and September are transcribed.
The letters, dated 1856 to 1863, are to Thomas Washington Atkins from his family, friends, and fellow soldiers. Early family
letters mention health, social events, and political views, especially regarding secession. War-time letters mostly concern
the health and situations of family and friends. Later war-time letters often show weariness at the loss of life and continuation
of the war. The following soldiers exchanged letters with Atkins: William Parks Phillips, Samuel P. Shaw, John L. Giles, Fleming
Parks, C. B. Bledsoe, Samuel D. Nutt, William C. Nutt, Lewis O. Niles, and brother-in-law Nehemiah G. Andrews.
Taking place after the death of Atkins and Andrews, the correspondence from 1864 is that of Eliza Jane Atkins writing her
husband, Robert M. Walker, a soldier guard duty at Andersonville Prison, as General Sherman invaded Georgia.
The two original diaries of James Lewis Adams are dated January -November 1886 and include details of his health, work on
Oak Lawn plantation and an earthquake on August 31, 1886.

Audubon, John James, 1785-1851 |

|
Contents: |
The collection consists of approximately 400 original color prints by a number of important 19th century naturalists. The
majority of the collection comes from John James Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America and Pierre-Joseph Redoutés
Les Liliacées, Les Roses and "Choix des plus Belles Fleurs," as well as several prints from M.A. Burnett's Plantae Utiliores,
or Illustrations of Useful Plants, Employed in the Arts and Medicine, Part III. The collection also includes a Currier and
Ives print and a handful of botanical and natural themed prints by other artists including Wilkes, Curtis, and Gould. In addition
are over a dozen reference books, highlighting eight natural history reference books, many of which contain published copies
of the originals in the collection.
Though the prints originate from published works, none of the works represented here have a complete set of plates. For example,
in Series 3 Prints from Redoute's Les Liliaces, there are only a scant few prints from Volume 1, whereas the collection holds
many more plates from Les Liliaces Volume 8, if still not all of them. In several cases there are duplicate copies of identical
prints; this has been noted in the listing where it occurs.
