This collection consists of material collected by Bradley Chilton pertaining to the Guthrie vs. Evans trial from 1972-1983, a law suit that led to sweeping reforms in the Georgia prison system. It includes transcripts of court proceedings, court records, minutes, printed material, correspondence, news clippings, blueprints, and photographs regarding conditions in the Georgia State Prison at Reidsville and trial proceedings. Materials were used by Chilton for his dissertation and book, Prisons Under the Gavel.

Hal Henderson is a retired professor of political science from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Tifton, Ga. His main research field is mid-twentieth century Georgia politics. The oral history interviews in this collection are the result of research Henderson conducted for two books, one on Ellis Arnall and the other on Ernest Vandiver. This collection also contains eight VHS recordings from a symposium on Georgia governors directed by Hal Henderson and Gary Roberts that was held at ABAC in 1985.

The collection also includes letters addressed to Helen M. Lewis regarding the race and a report by Lewis on her experience working for Carmichael's campaign.

Photographs consists of over 2,600 unique photographs illustrates the life and career of Senator Talmadge and includes personal photographs as well as those released in public service. Early photographs include images of Talmadge's father, Eugene Talmadge, as a young man in 1910 and span his father's and Herman's political careers.

The Hollis Family Collection is comprised of three artifacts including one quilt, one cast iron stove, and one cast iron wash pot used by members of the Hollis family from the 1930s to the 1940s. The collection was donated by Carole and Gerald Hollis whose family's lived in Douglas County, Georgia during the 1930s and 1940s. The quilt, made partially from feed sacks in the 1930s, was donated to the Russell Library as part of the Rural Electrification Act Exhibit.

The collection includes a series of eighteen personal letters from Herman Talmadge to the Honorable Moses Leff, ranging from January 8, 1964 to October 15, 1980. The letters consist of thank you notes for Leff's attendance at Talmadge's birthdays, as well as an announcement of a marriage in the Leff family. One letter from 1969 discusses H.R. 10567, which proposed inscribing "Justice," "Mercy," and "Humility" on the one dollar bill.

John Harold Hawkins was born May 22, 1892, in Forsyth County, Georgia, the son of Perry C. Hawkins and Della Bramblett Hawkins. He was admitted to the Bar in 1916 and served as official court reporter of the Blue Ridge Circuit. Hawkins was nominated Associate Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court in the Democratic primary held September 8, 1948. The papers of Judge Hawkins include correspondence and printed materials related to his 1948 campaign, a small number of administrative and case files maintained by legal assistant Harold Glore, personal correspondence, clippings and photographs.

The collection consists of Democrat James L. Paulk's state senatorial papers during his term representing the 13th District from 1977 to 1979 and a small selection of files of Senator J. Ebb Duncan (30th District). Paulk's papers include incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, reports, clippings, bills, speeches, constituent questionnaires. Printed and photographic materials document state fiscal concerns, environmental issues, and the state of county correctional institutions. Of particular interest are the constituent surveys and responses from 1978 and 1979 as they reflect the opinions of Paulk's constituency on issues of the day such as the Equal Rights Amendment, tax issues, capital punishment, and teacher's compensation. Duncan's files, dating from 1977 to 1979, are legislative in nature and touch primarily on his efforts to secure transportation for the elderly and mentally challenged through S.B. 553.

J.B. Stoner, a Georgia native, was a prominent member of the Ku Klux Klan, the segregationist National States' Rights Party, and founder of the Stoner Christian Anti-Jewish Party. In 1977, Stoner was indicted, and was later convicted and imprisoned, for the 1958 bombing of Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. He ran for numerous public offices including governor of Georgia in 1970. This collection contains Stoner's gubernatorial campaign poster and a flier for a 1974 meeting of the National States' Rights Party.
