views. Entries in 1861 describe his journey from Richmond, Virginia to Tallahassee, Florida after being assigned as aide-de-camp
to General John B. Grayson, who was Commander of the Dept. of East Florida. Wood describes the various towns he traveled through
and upon arriving in Tallahassee, the illness and death of General Grayson. In 1863, he writes a short entry discussing the
war's impact on his personal philosophy. The volume also contains personal financial accounts from 1868-1869.

The collection consists of papers of Mills B. Lane, Jr. Mills B. Lane, Sr. and the Mills family from 1916-1989. Materials
(1916-1943) relating to Mills B. Lane, Sr. include incoming correspondence and carbon copies of Mills' outgoing letters, clippings,
photographs, and legal documents. The materials document Mills' banking activities including his presidency of the Citizens
and Southern National Bank (Savannah, Ga.) and tenure as chairman of the Board, as well as Mills' involvement with Georgia
real estate sales, fertilizer and chemical companies, and his assistance to Georgia farmers through bank loans. Correspondents
include Lane's brother Edward W. Lane and A.P. Brantley.
The bulk of the collection (1931-1979) contains the correspondence of Mills Bee Lane, Jr. Includes letters (1931-1934) between
Lane, Jr. and his parents, Lane, Sr. and Mary Comer Lane, while a student at Yale University; letters (1935-1945) between
Lane, Jr. and Lane, Sr. discussing banking activities, finance, and farming; correspondence (1950-1974) between Lane, Jr.
and his brother Edward C. Lane concerning finances and the management of Edward's farm in Valdosta (Ga.); and letters (1958-1973)
between Lane, Jr. and Mills Lane concerning Mills' schooling at Middlesex School (Concord, Mass.) and Harvard University,
Mills' activities with Beehive Press (Savannah, Ga.), and Mills' finances. The collection also contains correspondence pertaining
to the resignation of Richard Kattel, the financial crisis of Citizens and Southern Bank (1978), and the establishment of
the Mills Bee Lane Memorial Foundation (Savannah, Ga.).

cousin H.L.G. Whitaker, while serving in the 29th Georgia Infantry Regiment in 1864. Letters are mostly written during the
Atlanta Campaign, except for one, from James Polk while he was in a hospital in Alabama. The letters contain some comments
on fighting, but the soldiers mainly discuss their fears of dying and concern for friends and family in the war and at home.
Typed transcriptions are available for most of the letters.
