Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of papers pertaining to the family and decedents of the Oliver Hillhouse Prince from 1785-1919. A considerable number of documents focus on Oliver Hillhouse Prince, Jr., including his interest in the genealogy of the Prince family and documents relating to his service in Cobb's Legion during the Civil War. Correspondence is written by or addressed to Abraham Baldwin, Mrs. Martha Price, Martha J. Jackson, Dr. H. Jackson, and John B. Lamar. Of particular interest is a parody of a court case at the Honorable Mouse-Owlry court, in Bibb County, where Billy Beeswax of Honey Comb Hall is petitioning that Peter Pushroot pays him the 400 bushels of potatoes he is owed. The collection also includes wills of Oliver H. Prince, Henry Jackson, Joseph Webber; and a scrapbook containing mostly printed pictures and newspaper clippings relating to Georgia political matters and deaths of Prince family members and notable Athenians.

Accompanying is a note of October 8, 1971 from Reg Murphy, the editor (in 1971) of the Atlanta Constitution to Gary L. Doster referring to Hemphill's letter.

The collection consists of two letters from William P. Trent to William E. Boggs (Chancellor of the University of Georgia). The first dated University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, November 14, 1890, regarding an offer from Chancellor Boggs to Mr. Trent to fill the Chair of History at University of Georgia; Trent speaks about advantages and disadvantages of being at Sewanee, and asks about teaching loads at the University of Georgia (final page of letter is missing). The second letter dated Westmoreland Club, Richmond, Virginia, February 4, 1891, regarding his complicated decision to decline the offer for Chair of History; he speaks of positions at University of Georgia, and the policy for hiring; he plans to visit Athens and see the University, "provided always that the Trustees do not require a formal application."

Swift at Camp Desert Plantation, Riceboro, Liberty County, Georgia to his parents in New Bedford (Mass.) in 1838 and three letters to Swift in Charleston (S.C.) from his brother O. N. Swift in 1839. The letters discuss family news and describe various aspects and problems of hauling and shipping lumber. The collection also includes an account (1848) for William C. N. Swift with Baring Brothers Company (London).
