Scope and content:

Letter from Joseph E. Brown to Colonel William Letcher Mitchell regarding his efforts to keep the University of Georgia segregated. Fearing the loss of white student enrollment and funds Brown proposes using the University's federal funds to give African Americans an institution of their own instead of integrating UGA.

Biographical / historical:

Joseph Emerson Brown (1821-1894) was a lawyer, Georgia governor (1857-1865), and U.S. Senator (18780-1890). Joseph Emerson Brown's son, Joseph Mackey Brown, would go on to become a two-term governor of Georgia. Built in 1932, Joseph E. Brown Hall on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens is named in his honor.
