The Zell Miller Papers document Miller's forty-five year career in Georgia politics, including his service as a U.S. Senator (2000-2005), Governor of Georgia (1991-1999), Lieutenant Governor of Georgia (1975-1991), Executive Director of the Georgia Democratic Party (1971-1973), member of the State Boards of Pardons and Paroles, Probation, and Children and Youth (1964-1973), Executive Secretary to Governor Lester Maddox (1969-1971), State Senator (1961-1965), and Mayor of Young Harris, Georgia (1959-1960). Series VIII. Publications includes notebooks containing drafts, uncorrected proofs and galleys, correspondence, and clippings relating to five of Miller's books.

This collection primarily focuses on the research and publication of the book Carl Vinson: Patriarch of the Armed Forces by James F. Cook. Photocopies of research material, notes, correspondence, photographs, and transcripts of interviews make up the majority of the files. There are three albums containing original correspondence between Carl Vinson and Louis Stockstill, journalist for Army-Navy Times, and Neta Stockstill, secretary for the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, dating from 1962 to 1976. Also, there are a few of Cook's early writings and a small amount of material related to his book Governors of Georgia, 1754-2004.

The materials in this collection document events surrounding the desegregation of the University of Georgia in January 1961. The clippings, legislative reports, petitions, and correspondence that comprise the collection serve as both a record of the steps involved in desegregating the University and the span of public opinion--both local and nationwide--on the events at the time. Dean Tate's role in overseeing and responding to student conduct in the aftermath of desegregation is a major topic of the collection.
