Records relating directly to John Jones include sermons (1830-1883), various diaries and financial ledgers, legal documents, and materials relating to the Presbyterian Church. The collection contains some material relating to various Jones family plantations in Georgia including Hopestill and Bonaventure. The papers also include scrapbooks, photographs, newspaper clippings, records of enslaved persons, court records, and legal documents.

The collection consists of papers of John Brown Gordon and the Gordon family from ca. 1841-1979. Papers relating to John Brown Gordon include correspondence, writings, photographs, and scrapbooks. The correspondence (1861-1930) consists of letters written to his wife, Fanny Haralson Gordon, mainly while Gordon was serving in the Confederate Army in the states of Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland; letters (1864-1870) from Robert E. Lee; and correspondence to and from his family while he was serving as a United States Senator in Washington. Other Gordon family members represented in the papers include Hugh Haralson Gordon, Caroline Lewis Gordon, and Lewis Gordon. The collection contains an interesting set of letters (1941-1948) to and from Rev. John Dawson Gordon, whose parents were enslaved by, and later, servants of the Gordon family from 1854 until they moved to California in the 1890s. The collection also contains papers relating to the Haralson family, consisting mainly of correspondence (1841-1851) between Hugh A. Haralson, while serving in the U.S. Congress, and his wife, Caroline Lewis Haralson, and their daughters Elizabeth, Fanny, and Caroline. Mrs. Haralson's letters to her husband provide an indepth look at her management of their plantation in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia, while her husband was away from home. The collection also contains genealogical materials relating to the Gordon, Haralson, Hodgson, Howard, and Lewis families.

Note The collection consists of the papers of Edward Harden and other Harden and Jackson family members of Savannah and Athens, Georgia from 1779-1928, including letters, receipts, autographs, commissions, deeds, diaries, scrapbooks. Materials relating to Edward Harden, a planter [enslaver] and politician from Savannah and Athens, include indentures, receipts, account books (1836-1842) for his law practice, and common place books (1805, 1830-1837) containing accounts for his plantations, legal notes, and journal entries. Some materials describe persons enslaved by Edward Harden. Also included are the diaries of Mary Ann Elizabeth Randolph, Mary Elizabeth Greenhill Harden, and Edward Harden Jr.'s children. The diaries (1864-1928) of Harden's great-niece, Eveline Harden Jackson, describe her school days, social activities, the Civil War, and news of family and friends.

Topics covered include the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, slavery and the lives of enslaved persons, the Salzburgers, and Native American tribes in Georgia. The collection contains papers of John M. Berrien; William H. Crawford; John Forsyth; Williams Gibbons; Charles Harris; Herschel V. Johnson; James Wright; the Bosomworth, Habersham, and Houstoun families; as well as numerous other Georgians. Of particular interest are records (1861-1863) of the Consulate of Great Britain in Georgia during the Civil War; an account book (1818) of Dr. Lewis H. Feurth containing the date, name of patient, treatment, and payment; a diary (1733) of Peter Gordon describing life in Georgia and relations with the Indians; a diary (ca. 1714-1763) of Caleb Davis pertaining to his trading activities in Georgia with the English and Spanish; and a letter book (1804-1806) of William Woodbridge documenting his import/export business and the difficulties of trading with Europe and England during the Napoleonic Wars.
