Contents: |
The collection consists of papers of Howell Cobb and the Cobb family from 1793 to 1932. The bulk of the collection is correspondence,
mostly addressed to Howell Cobb, dating from 1839 to 1868. There is a large amount of correspondence between Howell Cobb,
his wife Mary Ann Lamar, and her brother John B. Lamar. The letters discuss politics in both Georgia and the United States,
the Confederate States of America including its formation and administration, and information on Cobb's business interests,
especially his plantations. After Cobb's death in 1868, the remainder of the correspondence is between other family members
including John A. Cobb, Howell Cobb, Jr., Alexander Erwin, and Mary Erwin discussing family and social news, business interests,
and legal cases. While the correspondence primarily documents the Cobb, Lamar, Erwin, and Barrow faimilies, there is also
a large amount of correspondence from the Jackson, Hull, Rootes, Lumpkin, King, Pope, Rutherford, Prince, and Nisbet families.
The earliest material includes indentures and land grants (1793-1829) relating to Zachariah Lamar's business interests.
The clippings do not focus on Howell Cobb, with the very rare exception. These seem to have been donated by family but are
very general in nature. The journals and diaries are from family members and friends.

Letters to Louise Kingsley Savage

Dates: |

|
|
Contents: |
This collection consists of correspondence, the majority of which were written by John A. Savage, Jr. to his wife, Louise--
both from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Beginning with their courtship in 1857, the letters document their relationship. There is
a chronological gap in the letters from 1859 until 1862 in which time John and Louise were married and started a family. In
1862 John entered the Civil War, and the correspondence reflects the physical and mental strains the war put on its participants.
The letters from 1862-1865 were written while Savage served in the 28th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, where his regiment was
involved in the battle of Helena (Ark.) and the siege of Vicksburg (Miss.). His later letters describe in detail the battle
of Cold Harbor (Va.) while he was in the 36th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment.

The collection consists of letters, pictures, clippings, manuscripts, programs, printed materials, notes, file cards, and
other materials concerning the life, career, and writings of the late Dr. Clarence Leonard Jordan, founder of Koinonia Farms,
an agricultural missionary enterprise, and inter-racial community. The early letters, largely from Clarence Jordan to his
mother, are most revealing as to the character of the man. The many clippings and printed materials about Clarence Jordan
and Koinonia also give insight into the community life, and the programs indicate the wide demand for Dr. Jordan as a speaker.
The collection also includes the manuscripts, both written and typed, with annotations and/or corrections and revisions of
many of Dr. Jordan's writings, particularly the Cotton Patch versions of the Gospels.
The collection is arranged into folders but for the most part it has been described at container level.
