Howard Newman from May 10,1863 to April 4, 1865 as he commanded the USS Dawn, USS Pembina, and USS Nyack in both the North and South Atlantic Blockading Squadrons. In it he discusses the deaths and desertions of crewmembers; movements of ships through the Potomac Flotilla off Port Royal, South Carolina; a shipwreck; and attacks on Fort Fisher and Fort Anderson on the Cape Fear River.
