The collection consists of papers of the Tate family of Gordon and Pickens counties, Georgia from ca. 1849-1975. The papers
consist primarily of correspondence, both business and personal. The business correspondence relates to the Tates' involvement
in the Georgia Marble Company (Tate, Georgia) and the Kennesaw Marble Company (Marietta, Ga.). The personal correspondence
is mainly between Edna Ferguson Tate and her children Sarah and William Tate. Sarah's letters are from Agnes Scott College
(Decatur, Ga.) where she was a student and from Orlando (Fla.) where she took a teaching job. William's letters are first
as a student and later as an instructor and Dean of Men at the University of Georgia and contain a substantial amount of material
relating to activities at the University and events in Athens, Georgia. Other correspondents include Philip May Tate, Stephen
C. Tate, Florence M. Tate, and Samuel Tate. The collection also contains photographs of the Tate family and the Georgia Marble
Company; account books ca. 1882-1904 pertaining to Sam'l & S.L. Tate & Co. (a general store) and the Georgia Marble Company;
and materials relating to the history of Pickens County (Ga.).

The collection consists of a letterbook of Henry Lathrop Turner from 1895-1897. Approximately five hundred letters addressed
to several recipients address a plethora of issues. Several letters concern the Cotton States Exposition in Atlanta in 1895.
Letters addressed to Alfred Orendorff, Mayor Porter King, Captain Henry C. Ward (and others) regard exposition grounds, pitching
up camps and feeding regiments, running out of cups, setting up programs and parades, football games between athletic clubs,
and battle exercises. Further letters addressed to Thomas Cratty, General George W. Wingate, E.P. Ripley, and A.B. Nettleton
(to name a few) regard stocks, stock holders, franchises, and "the butter matter."

collection also contains Civil War correspondence between Shatt C. Mitchell of the 13th Georgia Infantry Regiment and his

clippings relating to Corra Harris.

This collection consists of a variety of materials donated by the Chaffin family concerning the academic and professional
lives of Dr. Emory Chaffin and his son Verner Chaffin. The majority of the materials detail the varied studies of Verner spanning
from his high school and college graduations to materials collected as he attempted to learn Japanese after his enrollment
in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and materials collected during his time in Japan. The collection also contains materials
related to Dr. Emory Chaffin's medical practice and licensing and his membership in the Freemasons. In addition, there are
several large posters (Russian Propaganda and reproductions of watercolors depicting battle scenes recreated in Paramount's
motion picture "Wake Island"). Included are an early 20th century teacher's grade book, plaques showing various Georgia colleges,
a picture of a 1960s DAR banquet in Washington, D.C., and a press release detailing an architecture exhibition at Georgia
Tech.
