This series consists of photographs, primarily black and white, covering civic events Pilcher attended and various trips he
made as a congressman. Because Pilcher played an important role in federal construction in his distriction, the series also
includes views of the Moultrie post office and the town of Cavalry, among others. Among the some the more notable individuals
appearing in the photographs are: Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert H. Humphrey, Henry Cabot
Lodge, Jr., Francisco Franco, and Chiang Kai-shek.

Excluding a brief autobiographical sketch of Smith, the focus of the collection is U. S. Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. News
clippings and mementos such as the announcement and platform for Governor of Georgia in 1930 and ballots for that election
document the early years of Russell's career. News clippings begin in 1930 and extend to 1970. There are also programs of
events memorializing the Senator after his death, as well as a few items concerning the Richard B. Russell Memorial Library.
A copy of Senator Russell's will is included. Smith's record of mailed contributions to Russell's campaign fund is also part
of the collection.
The collection also contains photographs of various United States government officials (Robert McNamara, Herman Talmadge,
Frank Carlson, Robert G. Stephens, Jr.), including former presidents (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower,
John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson). Other miscellaneous photographs include images of the Biltmore House in Ashville, North
Carolina and a group of high school students from Athens, Georgia visiting Washington, D.C.

The J.B. Fuqua Public Service Papers detail the political career of self-made businessman and philanthropist, J.B. Fuqua.
Fuqua was born and raised in Prince Edward County, Virginia before settling in Augusta, Georgia with his family. His primary
business was ownership of WJBF television and radio stations. Fuqua became involved with politics in 1957 when he was elected
to the Georgia House of Representatives for Richmond County where he served four terms. During his tenure as a politician,
Fuqua was responsible for helping Carl Sanders become elected as governor in 1962 and also served as a member of the Democratic
National Convention Committee in 1964. The collection includes papers detailing Fuqua's involvement with the Georgia Democratic
Party, photographs, campaign memorabilia, and audiovisual materials.

D. W. Brooks was a major figure in American agriculture. He was the founder and leader of Gold Kist, a farm cooperative, for
almost fifty years and also served as an agricultural advisor to several U.S. Presidents. This collection consists primarily
of oral history interviews with D.W. Brooks conducted by Brian S. Wills. D.W. Brooks discusses his family background, his
childhood in Royston, Ga., his education, and his involvement with the Methodist church. He speaks extensively about topics
related to farming and agriculture in Georgia, including the founding and development of Gold Kist, the poultry industry,
fish and cattle production, cotton farming, and the federal government's involvement with farming co-ops. Brooks also discusses
his contribution as an agricultural advisor to United States presidents and world leaders. Complimentary interviews in this
collection with individuals such as former President Jimmy Carter and Secretary of State Dean Rusk provide additional perspectives
on Brooks and his contributions.

The collection consists of eleven commercially-released interviews of Dean Rusk conducted in 1987 by Edwin Newman for the
Southern Center for International Studies and one copy of The Seventh Annual Report of the Secretaries of State, 1989: "American
Foreign Policy: The Challenges, The Opportunities, The Dangers." In the interviews, Rusk discusses growing up in Georgia,
his experiences in the State Department, and his views on the war in Vietnam, the Nuclear Age, and U.S.-Soviet relations throughout
the Cold War. The Seventh Annual Report of the Secretaries of State includes a roundtable discussion by former U.S. Secretaries
of State on the subjects of East Germany, the Cold War, the Soviet Union under Mikhail Gorbachev, Nuclear Proliferation, and
the Tiananmen Square incident in China.

(1967-1969), Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs (1969-1972) and Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany
(1972-1976). The collection consists of Hillenbrand's personal papers and provides an overview of his life and career in diplomatic
service. The papers also document his academic career at The University of Georgia (1982-1997) and involvement in international
diplomatic organizations. Of particular interest are his personal, hand-written journals and notebooks which begin with adolescence
and extend through retirement. Included in the collection are published and unpublished articles, drafts, speeches, notes,
journals, correspondence, clippings, photographs, artifacts and audiovisual material.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection comprehensively documents Russell's activities as a United States senator representing
the state of Georgia. The Dictation Series is composed of letters and memoranda entirely or partially dictated by Senator
Russell. The series is an integration of the copies for the Winder and Washington offices. Most of the dictated correspondence
or memos contain Russell's views on upcoming legislation, political appointments, support of or opposition to bills and amendments
as well as his positions on such issues as defense, the Vietnam war, agriculture issues, the investigation of the assassination
of President John F. Kennedy, and civil rights and other national issues. Senator Russell rarely expressed his opinions regarding
local and state politics in writing or in any public forum.
