The collection consists of letters written during the Civil War by Allen C. Jordan, his brother Thomas W. Jordan, and several other family members. Allen Jordan's regiment moved through Virginia (Gordonsville, Culpeper, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Winchester) and Tennessee (Chattanooga, Greenville). His letters describe battles, the food and clothing he needs from home, and his desire to see his family again. A final letter (August 19, 1864) to his parents from their nephew Floyd Jordan tells them of a battle at Front Royal (VA) and the names of the men captured, including Allen and Thomas Jordan. Both were sent to Elmira Prison (NY) where they died in 1865. Also included are several financial papers of the Jordan family and two poems/verses written by Hattie Barton.

The collection consists of three manuscripts, written in the form of a detailed diary, signed "Amos Guthrie," dated May 9, 1864-May 31, 1864. Guthrie writes about marching through Chickamauga Creek, Tunnel Hill, Ringgold, Dalton, Big Blue Spring, Cassville, and Dallas, Georgia. Diary entries mention different infantries, General Sherman, Johnston, rumors, positions, and the weather. The collection also includes a transcript of the manuscripts.

The collection consists of a journal and a Chapin family record which spans the years 1760-1962. The journal is a history of his experiences in the Atlanta Campaign, where he was wounded at the base of Kennesaw Mountain on 20 June 1864. It appears to have been written while he was convalescing at the hospital in Quincy, Illinois. Also of note is a page from the journal being a handwritten diploma from 26 June 1862 for Charlotte A. Cothran of Rome, Georgia, possibly indicating that the journal was taken when Chapin was in occupied Rome.

The collection consists of a Civil War diary of Lt. (later Capt.) Cornelius C. Platter from November 1864-April 1865. Platter's diary details Sherman's march through Georgia from Rome to Savannah and the march north through the Carolinas. He gives dates, times, and lengths of marches; describes the weather, locale, scenery, and food as well as orders, rumors, positions, troop moral, and administrative duties. The diary includes a description of the burning of Columbia, South Carolina, the news of the Confederate surrender, and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
