The collection consists of correspondence to James Gardner, most regarding problems with the sale of cotton cargo on the ship
Northern Liberties. The business letters mention the Embargo Act which prevented international trade to and from American
ports. On March 1, 1908, the embargo was superseded by the Nonintercourse Act which allowed trade to resume with all but France
and Britain. There is also a personal letter dated July 28, 1808 from Gardner's son Henry describing the play, "Andrian from
Glycery."
A second set of letters dated 1849 are to James Rhind (1811-1854), who married James Gardner's daughter Mary (1815-1851).
Also business letters, they were written by Charles Hartridge and William Duncan and deal mainly with the sale and prices
of cotton.

discuss cotton sales, the attack on Harper's Ferry, and abolition.

naval stores and pine lumber. The company dealt with firms in the United States, South America, and Spain.
