The collection consists of materials related to Studies in Southeastern Indian Languages (Athens : University of Georgia Press, 1975), including a proof copy, typescripts, notes, and other material relating to researches on various topics, development of the printed book, various drafts of the essays included, some relevant correspondence, and production notes. Studies in Southeastern Indian languages is the outgrowth of a series of symposia on the subject in the early 1970s. James M. Crawford of the University of Georgia headed the efforts to produce this volume of essays and the task was completed under his editorship.

The collection consists of typescripts, manuscript notes, proof sheets, and correspondence concerning "Sketches of the early history of Madison County" and "Autobiography of Rev. Groves H. Cartledge." Reverend Groves Harrison Cartledge made great efforts towards cataloging the history of Madison County, Ga., and the struggles of the pioneer 18th century minister Reverend John Newton of Hopewell Presbytery. Historical sketches mention many early Georgia families, Presbyterian churches in Northeastern Georgia, and include comments on such varied subjects as depredations by th Indians, soil conservation, difficulties of pioneer life, etc. Jessie Mize, Virginia and Charlotte Newton, and the Rev. Samuel Cartledge compiled this collection. The correspondence sheds further light on the publishing history and the background research performed by this dedicated group. Also included is a sizable amount of genealogical material on the Cartledge family and allied families of the Madison County area.

This collection consists of William Marion Carlton's correspondence (most of which is numbered according to when sent and when received), his genealogical worksheets, his booklets on the Carlton family, pictures, and other genealogical research materials. Other family names connected to the Carlton family of which there is a goodly portion of research on are: Alderman, Altman, Bates, Bryan, Carson, Casan, Chastain, Coker, Curtis, Davenport, David, Dougherty, Durrance, Easley, Fleming, Gray, Hendry, Hurst, Hollingsworth, Jarrett, Kendrick, McKinney, Martin, Mathis, Mickler, Moody, Moore, Murphy, Mustoe, Owen, Parks, Pipes, Powell, Puryear, Reed, Rogers, Simmons, Sloan, Spencer, Stewart, Sweat, Taylor, Trott, Whidden and Willingham. The collection consists of one bound manuscript compiled by Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. entitled "Letter of General Robert E. Lee tendering to the President of the Confederate States his resignation of the command of the Army of Northern Virginia: with explanatory remarks by Charles C. Jones, Jr." Thus, the main body of the manuscript is Jones' transcription of Lee's famous letter. More importantly, however, the volume has tipped in six prints of Lee, six of Jefferson Davis, two of General George Meade, and one each of Generals P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, A.P. Hill, T.J. Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston, John H. Morgan, and J.E.B. Stuart. Views included are two of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Capitol at Richmond, and two unusual views of Richmond, as well as a folding map. In addition three letters are tipped in: 1. opposite page 4. This letter from General G. E. Pickett to General Braxton Bragg, dated 26 April 1864, one page, discusses military matters preparatory to the Battle of the Crater and as such is historically important. 2. opposite page 6. Note signed by Robert E. Lee and addressed to President Davis informing him the the "Florida Brigade cannot be spared from the army." 3. opposite page 11. Note signed by Davis and dated 25 August 1863 referring to the above. Apparently both 2 and 3 are endorsements from the same original piece and separated by Jones for inclusion in this volume. The volume also has clippings of Jones' "A Piece of Secret History" (Scribner's Magazine, February 1876) and a review of this article (The Cycle, 29 January 1876).

The collection consists of a document dated 2 June 1871 that appoints a board of visitors to attend the second annual examination of the Normal and Prepatory Departments of Atlanta University. It is signed by Rufus B. Bullock as governor of Georgia. Among those named as members of the board are Joseph E. Brown, John Livingston Hopkins, W.A. Hemphill, Dr. S.H. Stout, and J. I. Whitaker. The present document is a true copy by H.C. Courson, Secretary of the Executive Department.

The collection consists of papers, pictures and other items concerned with the Everett, Foy, Burkes, Parker, Martin and Cadle families of Effingham, Screven, Bulloch and Emanuel counties of Georgia. There are a good many pictures. Some of the pictures were done by Mr. Wilson of Savannah, Georgia. An interesting part of this collection is the number of naval letters and papers of William Eden Cadle during the second World War. Mr. Cadle was sworn in at Macon, Georgia, on 20 April 1942 and trained at Norfold, Virginia. Mr. Cadle left Guam in September of 1945 and was discharged 24 December 1945 at Jacksonville, Florida.

The collection consists of papers of the Murrell family of Oxford (Newton County, Ga.) and Winterville (Clarke County, Ga.) and includes correspondence, business papers, receipts, and account books. The correspondence consists of seven Civil War era letters (1863-1865) to and from George Washington Harlan Murrell, but the majority consists of letters to Ermine and Elizabeth Murrell in Winterville (Ga.) from family and friends. The business papers contain receipts and indentures pertaining mostly to George Washington Harlan Murrell and George T. Murrell. The collection also contains reminiscences of George T. Murrell regarding his imprisonment at Point Lookout Prison (Md.) during the Civil War, receipts, individual photographs of the Emory University graduating class of 1900, and numerous account books relating to various businesses owned by the Murrell family in Walton and Newton Counties.
