Collection Description

Historical Note

William B. Hartsfield (1890-1971) was a six- term mayor of Atlanta. His parents were Charles Green Hartsfield and Victoria Dagnall Hartsfield of Atlanta. He was educated in the public school system but did not finish high school or attend college. He married Pearl Williams and had two children, William Berry Jr. and Mildred. In 1962 they divorced and hemarried Tollie Bedenbaugh Tolan of Athens, adopting her son, Carl. Hartsfield was elected to the Atlanta City Council and helped establish Atlanta's first airport, which was renamed the William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, and later Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. For more information, see the article William B. Hartsfield in the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of photographic material, books and magazines, correspondence, scrapbooks, clippings, literary productions, legal documents, and awards related to and authored by William B. Hartsfield. Some of the items included are a series of Airport papers, Hartsfield genealogy, Gone With the Wind movie premiere videotape and film, campaign stickers, birth records, campaign posters, and a collection of William B. Hartsfield's annual messages.
