The collection consists of correspondence from 1862 to 1870 to Mrs. Joel (Amelia) Chapin of Enfield, Connecticut from friends
of J. Leander Chapin regarding his imprisonment and death at Andersonville Prison, Georgia. The letters discuss the hiring
of Amelia Johnson in Andersonville to care for the grave and erect a stone. Johnson's letters contain very descriptive comments
about the cemetery and stockade. Also in the collection are three documents concerning death benefits paid to Mrs. Chapin
for her son's military service. Letters from Leander's friends who describe his character and death are also included.

The collection also includes two letters Knox wrote to his wife: dated Andersonville, Georgia, May 30, 1864, regarding Knox's
imprisonment; dated Annapolis, March 15, 1865, regarding his health and his exchange.
