Historical Note

John McKinney Howell (1833-1889) was born in Houston County, Georgia. In 1862 he enlisted in Company C, Mell's Regiment at Greensboro, Georgia. In July 1864 he was sent to Andersonville Prison (Sumter County, Ga.) as a surgeon.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of five letters John McKinney Howell writes from Andersonville Prison to his wife Emma Berrien Heard. Howell describes the prisoners and his duties as examining surgeon, and answers his wife's questions regarding the number of prisoners and fighting and hanging of prisoners. The collection also includes biographical information of John McKinney Howell, and transcripts of the letters.
