serving in Virginia. The diary transcripts (copied from the WPA transcripts) contain short entries discussing his religious
education, social life, his service as a minister including where he preached (mostly in South Carolina), his farming activities,
and finances.

faculty). In his first letter, dated March, 25, 1907, Phillips suggests sources of American history, England during the colonial
period, and "the colonies of South Carolina, Georgia, Barbados and Jamaica as a group." Letters dated October 5, 1907 and
February 11, 1908 are more personal in nature. Phillips responds to questions Brooks asked in previous letters, and suggests
sources of Georgia history, their locations and use.
