Note
These papers consist of research notes, pictures, clippings, articles and correspondence of the late Dr. Clarke Olney of the
English Department at the University of Georgia. The papers contain a wealth of research done by Dr. Olney for two books:
Caroline Lamb, a Biography and Dearest Lord: Caroline Norton's Letters to Lord Melbourne. Typescripts of both books are included;
neither has been published. An article, Caroline Norton to Lord Melbourne from the Caroline Norton research, was published
in Victorian Studies, March 1965. Papers from the research were read at SAMLA in 1954 and 1955, Glenarvon Revisited in 1954
and Caroline Norton's Letters to Melbourne in 1955.
Dr. Olney evidently intended to write a biography of Lord Melbourne, but on the publication by Lord David Cecil of The Young
Melbourne in 1939 followed in 1954 by Lord M as Parts I and II of a full study called Melbourne, Dr. Olney turned to the "Carolines"
in Lord Melbourne's life. There is research here for at least two books, and/or several articles, including pictures.
Research notes for Dr. Olney's book on Benjamin Robert Haydon and those for an article on Keats are not in the collection.
