Clifford Hodges Brewton Collection of Lester Maddox Speech/Press Records, Series III: Audiovisual, 1964-1976

The collection consists of materials collected by Reverend Clifford H. Brewton relating to Lester Maddox's terms as governor (1967-1971) and lieutenant governor (1971-1975), as well as his 1966 gubernatorial and 1968 campaigns. Brewton collected the materials for the purpose of writing a biography of Maddox, although it was never published. Audiovisual materials in the collection supplement the paper materials documenting Maddox's term as governor of Georgia and his subsequent campaigns for president of the United States in 1968 and for lieutenant governor of Georgia in 1970. Included among the four audiocassettes and 22 reels of ¼" audiotape are recordings of several campaign commercials for radio broadcast for both campaigns and speeches delivered for public events and private organizations throughout Georgia in his official capacity of governor.

There also are large numbers of materials documenting technological changes pertaining to UGA and other research and academic libraries.

Also included is a confiscated letter from a prisoner and a typed list of fines for traffic violations.

The collection is comprised primarily of papers which document the personal and professional life of J. W. Fanning, former Vice President of Services at the University of Georgia and namesake of the Fanning Institute located at the University of Georgia. The collection includes photocopies of Fanning's Bible study notes, The Business of Farming: Problems and Exercises in Determining Profits, Planning Operations, and Keeping Records written by Fanning, and a Fanning Institute fan with images of Dr. Fanning and Cora Lee Fanning. Also included in this collection are two scrapbooks compiled by Fanning's family with photographs, clippings, correspondence, speeches, and program material documenting Fanning's life and career.

The collection consists of five series: administrative records, professional papers, agreements and transactions, correspondence, and other material. Administrative records include documents related to the operating and publishing of GA Trend, the Phenix Citizen, and the Rockdale Citizen among other Grimes Publications productions. Professional papers include material from the Georgia Press Association, which Millard Grimes headed in 1985-1986, drafts and photographs from The Last Linotype: The Story of Georgia and Its Newspapers since World War II, as well as newspaper columns by Grimes and those about his career written by other newspapers. Agreements and transactions includes negotiations and legal documents created during business agreements and transactions between Grimes Publications and other entities. Professional correspondence and other material including photographs and civic engagement complete the collection.

The collection consists of bound typescripts that include sketch dialogue, light and sound cues, props and costumes, and notations on timing, some handwritten. This set is incomplete and includes scripts from episodes 96-199, 300-600, 5301-6450, and 7116-7325. The 1956-1958 scripts were personally owned by Bob Keeshan. Also included are a first draft script for the 25th anniversary episode dated March 2, 1981, program abstracts from 1968-1969, 1958 press kit, and transparencies and negatives.
