Charles L. Bowden Papers, 1883-1983, bulk 1937-1948

The collection documents the growth and development of the City of Macon primarily during the administration of Mayor Charles L. Bowden (1938-1947). Included are City of Macon financial statements (1928, 1937-1938); Macon Hospital Commission files (1945-1952); correspondence and photographs documenting the commission of USS Macon (1945) and the Macon premiere of God is my Co-pilot (1945); copies of Bowden's speeches and radio announcements; and general correspondence. Of note is the correspondence with Carl Vinson, especially in relation to the commissioning of the USS Macon. Correspondence between Bowden, his wife, Urney Fields Bowden, and their children, Charlotte and Patsy, illustrate family life in Macon in the 1930s and 1940s. The Bowden and Fields families are documented through genealogical research files and correspondence (1883-1889) between Urney Bowden's grandparents, W. G. Fields and Emma Massey (-1902). The papers include correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, financial reports, speeches and announcements, publications and clippings, and memorabilia.

Etta Colclough Whelchel papers, 1913-1968

This collection consists of academic and personal material related to Etta Colclough Whelchel. Her diplomas from both the Georgia Normal and Industrical College (1912) and the University of Georgia (1920) are found in the collection. There is also information relating the the early years of women students at UGA and Etta's founding, in 1920, of the first Y.W.C.A. on campus. In addition, Etta's 1924 wedding gown, shoes and gloves are in the collection along with early photographs of both Etta and her husband, R.F. Whelchel.

The geographical scope of the collection's contents primarily extends to the state of Georgia and somewhat to the Southeast more broadly.

This collection mostly consists of University of Georgia academic related material dating from the 19th century through 1945 but does hold a few records dating to 1978. Some academic items include recordbooks (grade reports and class records), graduation information, correspondence, application and transferral forms along with material related to various student organizations. Among the artifacts are such things as a time capsule dating from 1872.

The Pandora photograph file comprises the photographs captured by Pandora staff as they worked to create the University of Georgia's annual yearbook. The collection consists of far more images than those that made the final edition. The collection consists of nine series. Series one is "Academics" (1950s-2000) and includes photographs of University administrators and various academic programs. Series two is "Athens" (1970s-2000) and has photographs depicting Athens activities and places. Series three is "Campus" (1962-2000) and features pictures of campus buildings and structures along with some campus-based activities. Series four is "Events/performances" (1960s-2000) and includes photos of many of the entertainers and speakers (such as Pearl Jam and Leonard Nimoy) that came to campus. It also has pictures of events such as beauty contests and the President's Lecture Series. Series five is "Greeks" (1960s-2000) and features pictures of numerous sororities and fraternities and their activities. Series six is "Housing" (1970s-2000) and has photographs of University housing and dorm life. Series seven (1938-2000) includes pictures of various organizations on campus such the Black Affairs Council and Demothesian Society. Series eight "Sports" (1960-2003) has photos of many of the different sports played on campus. These range from football to gymnastics. Series nine "Student life" (1920s-2003) features images of students and their life experiences.
