Originally launched in 2004, the New Georgia Encyclopedia (NGE) is the first state encyclopedia to be conceived and designed exclusively for publication online. The website acts as an authoritative resource on Georgia's diverse history and culture, administered by Georgia Humanities in partnership with the University of Georgia Press, the University System of Georgia/GALILEO, and the Office of the Governor.
The NGE has its roots in the 1996 publication of The New Georgia Guide, an expansive travel guide devoted to Georgia's geography, history, and culture with different writers focusing on each of nine regions in the state. The New Georgia Guide was itself inspired by the New Deal-era WPA Guide to Georgia, and was published by the UGA Press in cooperation with the Georgia Humanities Council.
The NGE hosts an ever-growing collection of 2,300-plus articles and 6,600-plus images. It has earned awards and recognition from the Federation of State Humanities Councils, the Georgia Historical Society, the American Association for State and Local History, the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council, and Library Journal.
