The collection consists of materials collected by Keith M. Read documenting the history of Georgia from 1732-1905. The materials include account books, correspondence, deeds, diaries, indentures, land grants, letter books, and minute books. Topics covered include the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, slavery and the lives of enslaved persons, the Salzburgers, and Native American tribes in Georgia. The collection contains papers of John M. Berrien; William H. Crawford; John Forsyth; Williams Gibbons; Charles Harris; Herschel V. Johnson; James Wright; the Bosomworth, Habersham, and Houstoun families; as well as numerous other Georgians.

The collection consists of the papers of William H. Thomas from 1840-1875. Includes correspondence, legal documents, printed materials, maps (reproductions), and newspaper clippings concerning the acquisition of the Eastern Cherokee Indian Reservation and the title of the Indians within and without the Qualla Boundary in North Carolina. The collection also contains a copy of the full account of this transaction and an account of the suit of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians vs. William H. Thomas et al.

Edwin King Lumpkin papers, 1881-1921

Abstract Or Scope:
The collection consists of papers of Edwin King Lumpkin from 1881-1921. The majority of the collection pertains to Lumpkin's Athens (Ga.) law firm, Lumpkin & Burnett and includes mainly correspondence relating to law cases of Lumpkin and his partner Wiley B. Burnett. The collection contains personal correspondence to family and friends, including his brother Joseph H. Lumpkin, and his wife and children. The personal correspondence pertains to his law practice, social life in Athens (Ga.), Lumpkin's interest in national and state politics, and in particular the campaigns of kinsman Hoke Smith. The J.T. Dudley papers (1906-1912) contain correspondence dealing with buying and selling land throughout the South. The papers of Edwin K. Lumpkin, Jr. (1910-1915) consist mainly of correspondence relating to his legal practice. The papers of Lumpkin's law partner, Wiley B. Burnett contain mainly bills and receipts, with a few letters relating to the law firm.

The collection consists of papers of the Brown family from 1837-1930 including the Joseph E. Brown papers (1843-1883), the Joseph M. Brown papers (1860-1930), and the Julius L. Brown papers. The collection also includes miscellaneous materials mainly relating to Cora Brown and Joseph Grisham and an autograph collection apparently collected by Julius L. Brown which he either collected or selected from the Brown family papers. In some cases, a particular person is represented by a single item, while there are fourteen letters of Alexander H. Stephens to Joseph E. Brown discussing Reconstruction politics.

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of genealogy, land documents, correspondence, financial papers, writings, photographs, artifacts, and printed material. The correspondence includes letters to William J. Northen regarding the establishment of the town of Fitzgerald, Georgia; letters regarding an apparent scandal involving the Farmers' Alliance and Leonidas Livingston; William J. Northen's letters home as he traveled around Georgia in 1907 promoting racial harmony; and two Civil War letters from brothers William and John Henry Neel of the 15th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Company K. The writings contain a journal by William J. Northen in which he writes of his trip to Tallulah Falls, speeches at Mercer University, his 21st birthday, death of his brother, and a letter to his sister regarding conditions at the end of the Civil War. Farm accounts are also included in the journal. Also of interest are slave documents and bills of sale; receipts from Mercer University and the Georgia Baptist Convention when Peter Northen was treasurer; Ruth Northen's photo album containing University of Georgia photographs from 1911-1912 and other travel photographs; and an 1801 indenture between the Catawba Indians and Thomas Neel for land in York County, South Carolina. The following items were separated from the collection: walking cane without the handle and one square back wooden chair with cane seat is housed in Organic storage.

Rhind / Stokes family papers, 1788-1919

Abstract Or Scope:
The collection consists of papers of the Rhind / Stokes from 1788-1919. The papers include personal and business correspondence and financial records of James Rhind (1848-1854), Colden Rhind (1884-1911), James Rhind Stokes and Sarah Gardner Stokes (1884-1949), and J.R. Stokes (1906-1917). Bound volumes contain business accounts (1788-1811) from several merchants in Augusta (Ga.); a cotton invoice book (1843-1848) and letter books (1843-1852) for James Rhind ? and several ledgers relating to Colden Rhind's brokerage businesses (ca. 1886-1909). Of particular interest are records of H.T. Massingale, a Quartermaster for the Confederate Army from 1861-1864. These records include requisitions and pay vouchers from Tennessee (1861-1862) and Atlanta (1862-1864) and Augusta (1864) Georgia. Also includes burial lists of Confederate soldiers and Federal prisoners from various hospitals mainly in the Atlanta area dated December 31, 1863.
