Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of papers of Lillian Smith from ca. 1920-1980. The papers contain personal correspondence, manuscripts of her works, writings by and about her, files on various organizations she was interested in or involved with (many dealing with human rights), audiotapes containing interviews with and readings by Smith, speeches, financial records, photographs, and printed material. Part of the collection contains records relating to her involvement with the Laurel Falls Camp for Girls including correspondence, applications for admission, printed material, and scrapbooks. The collection also has papers (mainly correspondence) of her friend, Paula Snelling; her sister, Esther Smith; and the Barnett family. Also included is a film reel entitled "Miss Smith of Georgia."

Stanley W. Lindberg papers, 1950-2000

Abstract Or Scope:

This collection consists of the papers of Dr. Stanley W. Lindberg, the longtime editor of The Georgia Review. His correspondence with many well-known authors such Robert Penn Warren and Pat Conroy is found in the collection. In addition, there are documents related to the "Roots in Georgia" Literary Symposium of 1985. Materials associated with the 1996 Atlanta Olympics such as those concerning the Cultural Olympiad. Many of Lindberg's writings and speeches are here including those on the subjects of the McGuffey Eclectic Readers and U.S. copyright issues. Documents from his work before 1977 include materials from Lindberg's research toward his University of Pennsylvania Ph.D. dissertation on the subject of Samuel Johnson. There are also items from Lindberg's time as an editor with the Ohio Review.

Abstract Or Scope:

Processed materials include printed and manuscript materials that document Richard Harwell's interest in Southern history and the Confederacy. Included are Harwell's notes and revisions for his condensations of Freeman's "George Washington" and "R. E. Lee". Also included are manuscripts, proofs, and correspondence (1960-64) of, and relating to, "The Confederate Hundred", "John Esten Cooke", "Kate", "Outlines from the Outpost", and "Two Views of Gettysburg" (edited by Harwell). Also includes correspondence from Harwell's tenure as assistant librarian at Emory University and librarian at Bowdoin College.

The St. Catherines Island Archaeology Collection consists of documents, media, and electronic files related to the research, education, and conservation efforts on St. Catherines Island, specifically the field notes, photographs, illustrations, maps, analyses, publications, reports, and digital files associated with the archaeological work conducted on the island by the American Museum of Natural History.

The administrative subject and correspondence file contains comprehensive records from each of TIE's 4 basic divisions: Founders (1970-1980), has extensive correspondence related to the emergence of the Founders consortium as a distinct entity, its eventual attempts at restructuring, conference files, recruitment records, and a file sequence of member institutions; Board of Trustees (1971-1984) correspondence/subject file includes documents relative to Trustees' elections, annual meetings, and general administration; Assembly (1971-1983) records pertaine to recruitment, featuring file runs of both individual and institutional representative members; Office of the Executive Director (1967-1985) encompassing the most comprehensive administrative subject file in the collection, this subseries features the files of the last Executive Director of TIE, Ms. Josephine K. Doherty (these records are essentially in original provenance). Also included herein are materials on the Fifth Year Review Report, the Nuclear Winter Conference of 1985, financial records of TIE, and documents relating to the growth, development, and demise of TIE form 1967 to 1984.

John Brown Gordon family papers, circa 1841-1979

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of papers of John Brown Gordon and the Gordon family from ca. 1841-1979. Papers relating to John Brown Gordon include correspondence, writings, photographs, and scrapbooks. The correspondence (1861-1930) consists of letters written to his wife, Fanny Haralson Gordon, mainly while Gordon was serving in the Confederate Army in the states of Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland; letters (1864-1870) from Robert E. Lee; and correspondence to and from his family while he was serving as a United States Senator in Washington. Other Gordon family members represented in the papers include Hugh Haralson Gordon, Caroline Lewis Gordon, and Lewis Gordon. The collection contains an interesting set of letters (1941-1948) to and from Rev. John Dawson Gordon, whose parents were enslaved by, and later, servants of the Gordon family from 1854 until they moved to California in the 1890s.
