Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of diaries of Carlton Hillyer for 1859, 1861-1865, 1892-1895. The 1859 diary was kept by Hillyer while a student at the Union Academy (Washington, D.C.) and while the entries mainly document Hillyer's activities and lessons at school, he also discusses current events including the war in Europe, tensions in Mexico, local news of politics and court trials, and agriculture. The 1861-1865 diary contains writings of Hillyer including essays, poems, and translations of other's works. The 1892-1895 journal contains notes, probably used for newspapers columns, and clippings from the Augusta Chronicle of columns written by Issacher Marx.

The collection consists of receipted bills, promissory notes, and tax receipts of Seaborn J. Mays,including a bill of sale for an enslaved man named Phil, purchased from Thomas R. R. Cobb by Mays, and an enslaved woman named Caroline. A fi fa against William Moon for a dept owed to Mays. Also included is a record book of the Athens Benevolent Society.

The collection consists of two account books for the Athens Bobbin Mill and its predecessor the Athens Bobbin Works from November 1867 to December 1877 and April 1887 to December 1891. Volume one contains entries for customer or firm and includes the name, date, items purchased or ordered, and price. Additional entries pertain to wages paid employees and list name, number of days worked, and, in some cases, the amount paid. The first ledger also includes entries for letters received, answered, or sent and include the person's or firm's name, date, and address.

The collection consists of several of Laura Cobb Hutchins Paddock's puppetry artifacts, including a variety of hand puppets, stick puppets, and components of a puppet theater. The collection also contains several scrapbooks documenting Paddock's career as a storyteller and puppeteer under the moniker Aunt Lollipop. The scrapbooks are made up of newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, programs, diplomas, and other ephemera. Some of the scrapbooks document Paddock's family history. Several copies of Athens High School's literary magazine, The Scroll, dating from the late 1930s, are also included.

The Athens-Clarke County (Georgia) Unification Files document the dissolution of the governments of the city of Athens and Clarke County and the creation of a new consolidated government known as Athens-Clarke County on January 14, 1991. Documented to a lesser degree is Paul Hardy, University of Georgia Carl Vincent Institute of Government professor and attorney, and his role in the unification process and drafting of the final charter. The files consist of correspondence and memos, charter drafts and summary reports, commission meeting agendas and minutes, research materials, legal and financial information, organization charts, maps, clippings, and advertising materials.
