The Georgia Public Policy Foundation, established in 1991, is a non-profit organization dedicated to conducting scholarly research and analysis of state public policy issues and working to educate citizens, policy-makers and the media. The Foundation hosts events each year throughout the state that allow members to meet and discuss issues with political, education, media and business leaders. Past speakers include the President of the United States, U.S. Speaker of the House, Supreme Court Justices, U.S. senators, representatives, presidential candidates, ambassadors, state officials, governors, members of the national media and area business leaders. The collection is comprised of a variety of printed matter created by the Research and Public Relations Departments.

Benjamin Thomas Epps papers, 1904-2015, bulk 1904-1937

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of many folders of loose material including clippings, letters, drawings of Epps planes, writings, and photographs. Of particular note are several good aerial views of Athens and the University of Georgia (circa 1920-1930s). Also of interest are several pages of reminiscences by Ben Epps, Jr., in which he writes about his early life and flying. Additional material received in 2002 includes flight manuals, membership cards, transcripts of interviews, etc. The most important item in this collection is a scrapbook (1904-1963) which documents Epps' life as a builder and flyer of airplanes. Included are over 200 photographs, as well as some clippings and letters. A few photographs, etc. can be found here of other pilots, planes, and Epps' children who were also flyers.

The Photographs and Sketches consists of photographs of the Olin Downes and the Downes and Miles families from approximately 1910-1955. Includes photographs of Olin Downes; his wives Marion Davenport Downes and Irene Miles Downes; children Dorothy Downes Williams, Nancy Downes Smith, and Edward Downes; Raymond Miles and the Miles family; and various public figures or friends. The series also contains postcards of various locales in the United States and Europe.

John James Flynt, Jr. Papers, Series VII: Politics include files regarding political opponents, events, campaigns, and conventions. National party policy statements are an important part of the years when elections occur. The 1960 Kennedy-Johnson election is especially extensive and includes transcripts from the Kennedy-Nixon debates. Local elections include district correspondence, voter lists, financial statements, press releases, in the years they occur. Correspondence includes letters from Senators Talmadge, Kennedy, Kefauver, Humphrey; Representatives Johnson and Vinson; Governors Arnall, Sanders, Vandiver, Stephenson of Illinois and national figures like Ty Cobb, former President Harry Truman, are scattered throughout the series, especially after 1960.

John James Flynt, Jr. Papers, Series III: General is divided into two subseries: A. Miscellaneous, General and Individual correspondence and B. Subject files. These files contain background information on legislation, daily office activities, constituent inquiries, as well as various groups and activities. Files consist of correspondence, speeches, reports, news releases, clippings, and photographs. The majority of the papers date from the early sixties to the late seventies. The early years of this series, 1954 to 1962, coincide with Flynt's Departmental series, which date from 1963 to 1978. The researcher will need to consult the other portion of this collection to gain a more complete understanding of the congressman's work with legislation relating to the executive departments and commissions.
