Scope and content:

The collection consists of the personal and business papers of William E. Smith from 1851 to 1896, including correspondence, invitations, bills, receipts, and telegrams. Business papers reflect transactions of the law firm of Smith & Warren dealing with debt collection for individual agencies and mercantile businesses in Georgia; New York City; Charleston, South Carolina; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Albany, Georgia. Correspondence from the Mercantile Agency of Charleston and Comstock & Brother, New York City. Personal correspondence discusses family concerns, land transactions, social life of the period, and bills pertaining to groceries and sewing. Major correspondents include William Ephraim Smith, Jr.; Lou. S. Smith; Mary Smith; Carrie Smith; Samuel W. Smith and Sallie Williams. Collection also contains one letter, unsigned, describing a meeting with President Franklin Pierce.
