Scope and content:

This collection contains primarily correspondence of Judge Edwin King Lumpkin, eldest son of W.W. Lumpkin and Louisa King.

Boxes 1-35 contain correspondence, legal papers, briefs, etc. relating to numerous individuals and family members. The last part of the collection (Boxes 36-38) contains correspondence and papers divided by individual. These include papers of J.T. Dudley, a real estate agent and client of Lumpkin's; Edwin K. Lumpkin Jr., the Judge's eldest son also an attorney with several Negro clients; and W.B. Burnett, a law partner of Judge Lumpkin.

Biographical / historical:

Edwin King Lumpkin (1858-1938) was a partner in the Athens, Georgia law firm of Lumpkin & Burnett and married Mary B. Thomas. One of their sons, Edwin K. Lumpkin, Jr. practiced law with his father.

Lumpkin (1853-1938) attended the University of Georgia and received a civil-engineering degree in 1871. In 1878 he married Mary B. Thomas and passed the bar in 1879.

Lumpkin resided in Athens and was the father of three sons and two daughters. His title of judge was merely a courtesy, but he played an influential role in Georgia judicial history.

His wife Mary helped found the first garden club in Georgia in 1891.
